Zel Custom Adds .338 Lapua to Upper Lineup

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Zel Custom Manufacturing just released their third-generation Tactilite big-bore, bolt-action uppers for AR-style rifles. The new Tactilite “Gen-3” features an upper receiver machined from a solid billet of steel. Zel Custom Manufacturing also announced that the Tactilite is now available for the popular .338 Lapua cartridge, in addition its the existing lines of .50 BMG and .416 Barrett conversion kits.

Zel Custom Tactilite Upper

“Machining the upper receiver from a solid piece of steel offers several important advantages,” said Michael Brendzel, president of Zel Custom Manufacturing. “First, it allows us to create an integrated scope rail that will not lose zero. Second, we are able to precisely align the integrated scope rail with an integrated barrel extension to assure the greatest accuracy. Third, the solid receiver is stronger and more durable than the cast and/or welded uppers offered by competitors. While our approach is more costly in time and materials, we have taken the opportunity to reengineer our processes and have been able to maintain our well-known value pricing.”

Additionally, Brendzel had this to say about the introduction of a new caliber, “The .338 Lapua fills a critical void and we believe that Zel Custom provides an excellent value option in this space.”

The Official CIA Manual of Trickery and Deception

The Official CIA Manual of Trickery and Deception

Brought to you by authors Wallace and Melton, the same team who brought you “Spycraft: The Secret History of the CIA’s Spytechs, from Communism to Al-Qaeda “, “The Official CIA Manual of Trickery and Deception” delves into an interesting era in American espionage history. It was 1953, and the flames were just beginning to rise on the Cold War. Looking for any edge, the CIA turned to magician John Mulholland to adapt his techniques of stealth and misdirection to the craft of espionage. He produced two illustrated manuals featuring a range of tricks from placing pills into drinks to stealing documents and avoiding detection. The classified manuals were believed to have been destroyed in 1973, but the authors discovered a copy in 2007 among recently declassified CIA archives. For fans of espionage this is a major coup as basic tradecraft skills go out fashion long before they go out of date.

“The Official CIA Manual of Trickery and Deception” is available from Amazon or your local book seller.

Academie Duello

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

On a recent visit to Vancouver I passed an interesting looking storefront. My interest piqued I went inside and was amazed at what I saw. A large wooden floor was framed on either side by a brace of medieval weaponry. It turns out that this simple storefront was actually Academie Duello. Specializing in the western martial arts, they are the largest swordplay training center in North America. This isn’t something you would run across everyday so I had to learn more.

Academie Duello Quarterstaff Training

According to their website, “Academie Duello is a school of European Swordplay and Western Martial Arts devoted to teaching the weapons of the historical gentleman and warrior. Our Martial Arts training includes sword arts such as the rapier, sidesword, sword and shield, and long sword, as well as the quarterstaff, spear, knife and unarmed combat.”

Founded in 2004 the school continues to expand. On top of the weaponry they also offer falconry training. As I walked around the gym, I stumbled upon not one, but two birds of prey. Additionally, they plan to establish a museum of swords, armou and heraldry in time for the Olympics and offer visitors the chance to attend a drop-in lesson for $10.

High Gear Applications Coach Certification

Friday, November 27th, 2009

Blauer Tactical has some great news for those interested in advanced scenario training, force-on-force drills and role-player programs. They’re launching a brand-new, 2-day WEEKEND instructor certification course. HIGH GEAR Applications Coach is a certification course based on their Ballistic Micro-Fights™ & HIGH GEAR™ programs and will be dove-tailed with their popular Instructor Certification. Make sure you check with Blauer for special rates for those attending both courses.

High Gear in Action

The new course combines all elements of multi-discipline fight training and combines them with the training goals and objectives of Blauer’s 3 C’s Methodology: Clear, Control & Counter. This course is about enhancing training methods, improving safety, and taking your experience to the next level.

This course is open for all combatives, defensive tactics self-defense, and martial art enthusiasts and covers carefully-selected drills from Blauer’s force-on-force courses gleaned over the last 30 years of contact scenarios with martial artists, MMA superstars, police, and warfighters.

The course includes specific blocks of instruction covering:
• Personal defense confrontations
• Situational confrontations (using the BTS Fight House)
• MMA isolation drills (Cage)
• Basic contact striking & grappling skills
• Check out HIGH GEAR in action

Inspired by CrossFit’s huge success holding certs on the weekend, Blauer decided to follow suit with this course as well. Such weekend courses don’t conflict with most work schedules and travel is generally less expensive. Additionally, they’ve also dove-tailed it with their most popular course, the S.P.E.A.R. System: Instructor Certification. This way trainers can combine their S.P.E.A.R. course to include an advanced scenario instructor cert. However, it is important to remember that any serious trainer from any systems, styles, or programs can take the course.

HIGH GEAR will be available at a special price for those attending the certification (it’ll be part of a package deal). For those of you who already own HIGH GEAR but want/need the certification for your agency, unit, self-defense or martial arts school, there will also be a special price of just ‘tuition only’.

*HIGH GEAR will be on hand for rental & T&E for those that do not already own the gear.

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

Rumor has it that the HK MR223 introduced last year in Germany last year will finally be released here in the US after SHOT show. Apparently, there have been some ATF issues that have delayed importation of what many feel is the holy grail of HKdom.

The MR223 from H&K

However, the biggest news is that the US version will not feature the offset rear take down found on the European rifles. This means that American enthusiasts will be able to use HK416-style uppers with any Mil Spec lower receiver.

TAD Gear Hacked

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

I don’t think any company wants to have to tell their customers something like this but TAD Gear found out last night that their server had been hacked. They placed the following information on their Facebook page and are taking steps to fix things on their end. They recommend that anyone who purchased online from them between August 6, 2009 and November 16, 2009, cancel the card they used and take a hard look at any transactions.

“This notice is to inform our customers of a security incident at TAD Gear. We recently learned that our database was illegally accessed from an external source, and it appears that some customer data were taken, which may include customer names, contact information and credit card data. The possibility of a security breach came to our attention when certain customers notified us that unauthorized charges had appeared on their credit cards. Upon learning of the potential breach of security, TAD Gear immediately initiated an investigation, and took corrective steps based on the advice of an internet security firm. We have also contacted law enforcement.

If you purchased merchandise from TAD Gear on-line between August 6, 2009 and November 16, 2009, and the credit card used to purchase that merchandise is still valid, in order to protect yourself from the possibility of identity theft or misuse of your credit card information, we recommend that you immediately contact the issuer of that credit card and close your account. Tell them that your account may have been compromised. If you want to open a new account, ask your credit card issuer to give you a PIN or password, as this will help control access to the account.

In addition, we recommend that you place a fraud alert on your credit files. A fraud alert lets creditors know to contact you before opening new accounts. Just call any one of the three credit reporting agencies at a number below. This will let you automatically place fraud alerts with all of the agencies. You will then receive letters from all of them, with instructions on how to get a free copy of your credit report from each.

When you receive your credit reports, look them over carefully. Look for accounts you did not open. Look for inquiries from creditors that you did not initiate. And look for personal information, such as your home address and Social Security number, which is not accurate. If you see anything you do not understand, call the credit reporting agency at the telephone number on the report.

If you do find suspicious activity on your credit reports, call your local police or sheriff’s office and file a police report of identity theft. Get a copy of the police report. You may need to give copies of the police report to creditors to clear up your records. Even if you do not find any signs of fraud on your reports, we recommend that you check your credit report every three months for the next year. Just call one of the numbers above to order your reports and keep the fraud alert in place.

For more information on identity theft, we suggest that you visit the web site of the California Office of Privacy Protection at www.privacy.ca.gov, or the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/idtheft. If there is anything TAD Gear can do to assist you, please email us at action@tadgear.com, a special email address that we have set up to help answer your questions.”
