Tough Guy

Friday, November 26th, 2010

You gotta figure a race named ‘Tough Guy’ is gonna live up to its name. Purportedly the world’s most demanding one-day survival ordeal, Tough Guy is the grand daddy of them all having started in 1986. Last year over 5,000 racers participated in the two-mile obstacle course held on a farm in Perton, Staffordshire, England. The series of races are organized by Billy Wilson (using the pseudonym “Mr Mouse”).

Like many of these other extreme adventure competitions, participants must sign a “death warrant”, which acknowledges the risks and dangers. Gimmick? Sure, but with less than one-third of competitors finishing, race organizers can’t be too careful. After all, the race has previously suffered two fatalities. Why take a chance?

The M320 Holster You’ve Been Looking For

Friday, November 26th, 2010

In March, we introduced you to S&S Precision’s Holster for the M320 Grenade Launcher. Simple, yet effective, it provides a carrying solution yet unmatched.

Overall, Soldiers like the new M320 40mm Grenade Launcher but prefer to carry it in the stand alone configuration due to its weight and attached aiming device. Employing the weapon in this fashion also has the added bonus that the Grenadier will concentrate on using the launcher as a primary weapon rather than an add-on the M16/M4.

The issue with this is how to carry it. Soldiers have dreamed up several Rube Goldberg contraptions to secure the weapon when not in use. However, the best answer I have seen is the Grenade Launcher Holster from S&S Precision. Available in left and right versions, the mounting systems allows the holster to be attached to the armor at virtually any angle. Since most troops use the launcher with butt stock, there is also a paddle available for the holster to allow it to be hip mounted.

The launcher is held in place by a molded plastic shroud that grips the barrel. Additionally, the barrel sits atop a plug that features an O ring designed to keep debris out of the muzzle. The Grenade Launcher Holster also comes with a bungee to further secure the weapon when needed.

I highly recommend that Grenadiers take a look at this solution. It is also something that the folks at PM-Individual Weapons should consider. The holster is available from Grey Group.

Military Emergency Tourniquet – Generation II

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

This week is shaping up to be a ‘best of’ fest and the MET from TQS is in good company. In our opinion, this is the best tourniquet on the market. This article was first published in April of this year.

Military Emergency Tourniquetâ„¢ - Generation IITier-One Quality Solutions recently unveiled a new version of their popular Military Emergency Tourniquet, integrating improvements based on feedback from operational use. For example slight material changes have been made to ensure the tourniquet doesn’t loosen after application. The windlass has also been redesigned and is machined from aluminum.

Additionally, the MET is now available in MultiCam as well as AOR1 by special order to authorized customers. They also offer a couple of different color-matched, PALS-compatible sheathing options so it is best to discuss your particular needs with a representative.

This is an indispensable piece of kit when you consider 60% of all preventable deaths encountered on the battlefield are the result of uncontrolled life threatening hemorrhaging at the point of wounding. The swift application of a tourniquet is a critical life-saving measure.

The MET has been awarded NSN 6515-01-537-9259. To order the MET as well as any of their other products, visit www.tqsresponse.com. The MET is also available from Rally Point Tactical.

Nerf Transforming Assault Blaster

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

With obvious roots in the Magpul FMG9 Glock-in-a-box, Nerf has unveiled the Transforming Assault Blaster. Available from my favorite gadget store, Think Geek, this mild mannered rectangle transforms into a fully functional gun at the push of a button. Nerf included a built in flashlight for those covert missions in the dark, as well as rails to support all Nerf N-Strike accessories you may already have. Whether you choose to take advantage of the shotgun style reloading or the 6-dart clip, the Nerf Transforming Assault Blaster is a great gun to attack the enemy, or in my case, little brothers.

Look Ma, No Stache!

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Soldier Story and Cal-Tek USA are releasing an 12″ action figure of none other than 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR) ‘Night Stalkers’ Pilot CW4 Todd McDunn. Since retiring from the Army, ‘McStache’ as he is fondly known, has been in charge of Eagle’s aircrew systems program.

With assistance from Monkey Depot, Soldier Story and Cal Tek have worked with a real 160th pilot Chief Warrant Officer McDunn. Eagle Industries supplies the tactical nylon gear to the Night Stalkers and CWO McDunn is in the unique position of not only having served in the 160th, but have access to the ‘latest and greatest’ upcoming gear allowing Soldier Story to have unprecedented access to the gear load out of a 160th pilot. In addition, this is the only action figure produced to have the approval to use the official Night Stalkers insignia and be approved by the unit.

The 160th SOAR “Night Stalkers” Todd McDunn figure is loaded with accurate equipment and features the new Eagle CIACS 6 aviation body armor. The HGU-56 helmet has been engineered based on an actual helmet and includes the smallest details never before produced in 1/6th. This amazing figure will be available at all authorized Soldier Story retailers in January 2011.
