The Brookwood Army Camo Improvement Effort Submission

We got some photos of Brookwood’s finalist submission for the US Army Camouflage Improvement Effort and at first we didn’t want to offer them because the patterns didn’t seem to share a common geometry. We were actually hoping to get some better photography that would show the patterns’ common features. Turns out, having a true family of patterns with common geometry was just general guidance and not a factor in selection and the Brookwood patterns don’t include this feature. So here they are.

Thanks for the photos LH

Dang! I should have patented that pattern when I spray painted my Gott cooler with it!

  2. robert says:

The brookwood woodland looks like… m81 woodland. Am I to understand that the great leap forward in camouflage is to return to the last pattern that was effective?

  3. Strike-Hold! says:

Looks like it Robert. And what really amazes me is that these patterns were supposedly ranked among the best when the pattern-in-picture analysis was conducted….

  4. Ken says:

As does ADS’s woodland entry, just pixelated. How are these above patterns a “finalist?” Looks like they took a tan 599 swatch and had somebody’s 4-year old paint by the numbers. Impressive.

  5. Paul says:

I love classic wdl and that one looks great too.

  6. Ipkiss says:

That’s just dissappointing really. The Kryptek pattern just screams high-tech (maybe a bit too much) and then you got this.. The ADS still has my vote, but I’m now getting very curious on the Crye entry.

  7. SGT Rock says:

Ugh! Please don’t harken back to the M81 pattern or incorporate black into the pattern either. The color black does not occur naturally in nature save from shadows.

    • Greg says:

Way to go keep it comming, woodland looks like a pretty sweet throwback to M81. Plus black is still a kick ass color for camo, but my cash is still riding with ADS. But what is up with arid? Is there grey in sand? or am i seeing things.

Kryptec – as good as it looks its like Ipkiss said, looks too (high Tec) and likely overpriced

ADS – seems about appropriate and looks affordable

Brookwood – hint of old/new tech looks, interestingly odd and probably affordable

      Crye – still waiting TBA

Natick – From what i read apparently is way out of budget range and is out of the game

    • Jesse says:

I like camouflage in the shadows.

  8. Adam says:

They look like they were done with watercolors.

    • Riceball says:

That’s what I thought when I saw it, that or somebody painted directly onto the fabric with a brush and fabric dyes.

  9. Aaron says:

don’t mind me I’m just painting here

  10. straps says:

It’s not a camouflage pattern, it’s a series of Rorschach panels.

    #1 is Nemo the Fish.

#2 is a dismeboweled bear cub.

#3 is a herd of black rabbits cavorting in the forest after the spring thaw.

And yeah, I’ve already been told I’m probably not suitable for professions involving the use of weapons. Too late.

  11. Strike-Hold! says:

@Straps. LOL! I’m not crazy, and I have the evaluation certificate that proves it…

  12. Orion307 says:

    I have no response

  13. mpower6428 says:

we’d be better off if we just builting a factory that could plagerize every know “localy” produced camo pattern world wide.

blending in with the locals seems to be more important then blending into the backround at this point.

  14. Greg says:

I like to correct myself on that, when you click and blow up the image of woodland the black splotches look more deep blueberry blue than black.

  15. CAVStrong says:

I’d be interested to see how tjese patterns would look on a uniform. I am not sure these pictures are doing the pattern justice.

Still as of right now my vote (which counts foe so much) is for ADS. I really wanna see crye’s. But for now it’s ADS.

  16. Strike-Hold! says:

John – apparently that’s exactly what they have done. But Crye haven’t officially confirmed this yet – or released images of the patterns they’ve submitted.

  17. Lasse says:

Is Brookwood in this case the same Brookwood as the textile mill?

To me, this family seems to have too much black in it.

    • SSD says:

      It’s the same Brookwood. I’d say it’s more of a step-family.

    • Camo Developer Dude says:

Not only is there way too much black, there is too much green in the desert. After being deployed numerous times, I believe transitional is good for Afghanistan, and Straight tans/browns for desert terrains (Iraq, Iran, Syria).

  18. Eric says:

The ADS looks terrible….Not sure how it would look on an actual uniform but

This is a link to the ADS camo,
So far my vote on the overall best pattern that has been shown is the Kryptek.
It blends well in the environments that it is designed for and lets not forget it looks pretty bad a$$ a well.
However Brookwood has a contract price of about $80,000
    ADS and Crye- $600,000
And unfortunately Kryptek- almost $6.5 billion

    • SSD says:

SSD has featured a lot of info on the Army Camouflage Improvement Effort. More so , than any other source. You’re not presenting any new info in your reply and you’re actually getting things wrong.

Spend a little time reading ALL of the 4700 articles here and you will learn a lot. Also, actually READ. Kryptek’s contract ceiling isn’t in the Billions, it’s in the Millions.

      • Anti-Bureaucrat says:

Right. How many times have we seen less-factual posts stretching millions into “billions”?

        • SSD says:

what are you talking about? what you wrote doesn’t make any sense.

          • Anti-Bureaucrat says:

I have seen forums (on this site, as well as others) discussing government contracts ranginging in the millions. Then someone tries to reference that particular contract, in their post, using the term “billions”.

            • SSD says:

Yes, the Government will spend Billions recapitalizing. However, Kryptek, if selected, will only ever get a little over 6 Million. It’s been explained over and over.

      • Anti-Bureaucrat says:

So, when you said, “Spend a little time reading ALL of the 4700 articles here and you will learn a lot. Also, actually READ. Kryptek’s contract ceiling is in the Billions, it’s in the Millions.” …that made since?

        • SSD says:

If you read it, yes it made sense but not much since.

          • Anti-Bureaucrat says:

Dude, most of us read this forum to get information about new equipment, systems and camo; not get schooled by some Internet-wise @ss. So, yeah if I mispell a word due to texting on my phone while walking my dog at the park… Go ahead and attack that misspelling. But, keep in mind that readers are more interested in SUBSTANTIAL discourse, rather than having a pecker-fencing contest with the site admin/Internet warrior.

  20. Mississippi Red says:

Brookwood’s family of patterns clearly do not have the same geometry. If Brookwood wins, the other 3 vendors should protest because they felt the RFP constrained them to a single geometry (which, by the way, is ludicrous to have the same geometry in every environment).

If any of the three submissions with similar geometry win, then the others should protest because they are competing against baselines that do not have similar geometry (baselines are MultiCam, Marpats, BDU, etc).
