American Kami Reveals Project Mayhem

During this week’s USASOC Sniper Competition American Kami gave the world a sneak peek of what they’ve had cooking under the code name: Project Mayhem. The actual hawk will be called the MANIAXE and is essentially a system with various components.

Handles are made from two slabs of CNCed G10. Shown are the long handles but a shorter handle will be offered as well.

Various heads are already in production and can be swapped out. The blades are DLC coated and will be laser engraved once they get back home.

Some very useful (not to mention cool) features on this, but I’m not sure how the head mounting system will hold up under repeated stress…
That said, it will be interesting to see how it functions compared to other modern/tactical tomahawks, although I don’t think it’ll perhaps be as nice to handle as some of the full tang designs

    • SSD says:

There’s a mortise and tenon-style setup internal that helps stabilize the heads.

    • Toby: I have been building axes like this and had them out doing work in the field for over six years now, and have never had a case of head/handle failure. Plus, everything that my full house custom axes are, these are even more so. Bigger. Beefier. Even tougher materials. Oh, and they function great. I took one of the unsharpened ones and wrecked some cars with it at Bragg, and then we went over to Grey Group and chopped down a tree with it. Trust me, they’re made for real work. 🙂

All of their blades are chisel ground. Ewwwww 🙁
It’s a pity because the designs look pretty good otherwise.

    • Terry: All of my full house custom stuff is chisel ground. All of my Mid-techs are V-ground. The Maniaxe is V-ground. Not everybody loves the chisel grind like I do. Not a problem. If you want V-ground, I’ve got something for you, too. ;D

Just out of curiosity, what’s your beef with the chisel grind?
