The PMAG 40 AR/M4 GEN M3 is a 40 round version of the GEN M3 PMAG that accommodates the additional 10 rounds in an extra length of 2 1/8″. It also offers full compatibility with the USMC M27 IAR. The new M3 PMAG technology also incorporates a redesigned bolt catch notch in the rear of the magazine, providing increased bolt catch clearance, while an over-travel stop on the spine helps ensure the magazine will not over-insert on compatible weapons.
Sold in packs of 3, just like the original, the Magpul GEN 3 PMAG Ranger Plate is a floorplate replacement for the 5.56×45 PMAG AR/M4 GEN M3 magazines that incorporates an integral loop to speed extraction from pouches.

According to Magpul on Facebook:
“The 40 rounder was originally announced in 2010 but was put on hold until the PMag M3 upgrade program was completed in 2012 so that it could be compatible with the USMC IAR weapon system.”
The final release date is an amusing coincidence though.
In the meantime there are plenty of Mako/E-Lander H&K style 40rd AR mags to be had.

What’s the difference in the Gen 3 ranger plates compared to previous versions?
Different material? Bigger loops?
THe Gen 3 mags are thinner profile to fit pouches better, the Gen 3 ranger plates are thus smaller in width to fit the gen 3 mags. Dont buy the gen 3 plates for the previous gen mags. Or just buy Lancers.
The Ranger plates look to be all one type of material, hopefully that will eliminate the common point of failure that was seen in the previous generation.
There is no such thing as a ‘High-Capacity-Magazine’; that is a term invented by the ‘Anti-Constitution’ crowd.
30 rounds seems to be favored for its weight/capacity for carrying around.
I have carried 40 rounders (metal) in an AR, but, for me, they become a bit clumsy, but the PMag’s poly should nullify the extra weight.
I guess I could use a 3 pack, though.
