SIG SAUER - Never Settle

The Arc’teryx LEAF Cloak LT – Myth or Marketable?

By now you’ve seen the viral video by Tactical Distributors of Uber Group’s DK detailing the various functions of the fictional Urban Cloak. But what if it was a real product?

I just had a discussion here at OR with some of the folks on the Arc’teryx LEAF team (ok, it was Marc’teryx and someone else) about making a real cloak/cape.

Here was my pitch in a nutshell.

Arc’teryx employees have been manufacturing capes for Vancouver’s homeless in their free time for years as part of the Nest project. Made from scrap fabric, these cloaks provide rudimentary shelter for their wearers.

Every time I mention these cloaks, readers want to purchase them. So why not make a limited run of these simple garments that can be wrapped around wearer and gear? Make them in Urban Wolf or Crocodile and do a two-for -one deal. For every Cloak purchased through LEAF, a Cloak will be donated to a homeless Veteran.

Granted, they aren’t quite the same thing, but the this project would provide an item that the market has asked for and also provide some support to our brothers and sisters who aren’t doing so well. So what do you guys think?

Should Arc’teryx undertake this project?

  1. John says:

Yes, I would buy one in a heartbeat.

  2. Bluenoser says:

Having met both the LEAF team and spent a bunch of time around Hastings and otherwise, yes. This would be yet another way for the bird to go above and beyond.

  3. Sam says:

    Yes.

  4. Bob says:

    Absolutely!
I’d probably pick up two or three, depending on the price point. They look like they’d be handy just about anywhere. Besides, it’s about time the old poncho came into the 21st century.

  5. mike says:

I have been bothering poor Danica for years about these capes. I saw the video and immediately sent an email to Dave hoping that it wasn’t a joke. PLEASE MAKE THESE SO I CAN BUY TWO.

  6. mike says:

Seriously, I love ponchos and only Arc’teryx can make the next level changes necessary to make them comfortable and wearable instead of something you grudgingly put on because your gear is getting wet!

  7. skip says:

Yes, I would purchase one for a reasonable price, particularly if another was donated. Just the thing to carry in case of rain or wind in a bad spot.

  8. J J says:

That cloak could be adertised as a modern take of soviet “plashch-palatka”,and german zeltbahn.

  9. Mike P says:

They could make a bag for picking up dog poop in an urban neighborhood and people would buy them….

Joking aside, good on those dudes.

  10. Hobbit says:

    yes!

  11. Chuck says:

    I’ll buy ’em!

  12. BradKAF308 says:

Sounds like a good idea. What do you mean the cloak was fictional? As it isn’t engineered to the ‘nth degree the price should be almost average (fabric permitting) even when being a 2 for 1 purchase. It’s a great idea.

  13. Sal Palma says:

It’s good for home defense too….

  14. jbgleason says:

Cloak no. But you make me a CAPE and I am in. I always needed a cape.

  15. Debo says:

    Yes!!

Yes I would get one and think that is a great idea. I think even other colors would be popular to just wear around if they market it for everyone.

  20. Chris says:

    Ill do it

  21. MattR says:

    I’d buy one or two.

  22. JPate says:

Hell yes make them. Maybe even make a two sided reversible poncho, wolf on one side, croc on the other. One garment, multiple environs.

  23. Mark says:

Great idea, it’s a win, win, win (homeless/customer/company). Hats off to the Bird for this program.

  24. Rio says:

    To quote the internet:

“Shut up and take my money!”

Great cause, great product.. win win.

  26. xdarrows says:

I always carry a wool (loden) cloak with me while hunting in Europe (link below). While I was a bit suspicious at first, I was willing to try it out after Herr Friedl went on and on about how useful they are.

I think having a LEAF version would be an excellent take on a old idea.

  31. Peyton says:

    I’d buy one.

  32. GKoenig says:

That was my first comment on the cloak video! It was a giant tease for those of us who have been asking Arc’teryx to sell the Capes!

I’ve bugged the poor SOB they have running their Twitter feed about doing a 2 for 1 Cape program a couple of times. Arc’teryx clearly knows about the concept (it isn’t a rocket science breakthrough level idea), but they have never responded.

I would easily pay even a bit more than the Arc’Teryx premium to get a Wolf Cape, knowing that someone else who needed it was also getting a Cape.

  33. John says:

Got some cash to burn. Lets see them

  34. 2-137OPS says:

    SS,
I probably wouldn’t buy one, is there a way to donate instead?

  35. Rob says:

Bacardi and cola, do it, do it.

  36. Tim F. says:

I would love for Arcteryx to make the Capes available for purchase. I have wanted them for a while now and would love one!

  37. Matt says:

    Hells yes they should

  38. kAYA says:

    yes sir

  39. Dave says:

    I’m in!

  40. Olaman says:

    I’d take three.

  41. Matt says:

I’d buy one, they’d be fantastic for over watch on rooftops.

  42. BCP says:

    I’m in as well…

  43. Jwat says:

    $800 blanket? Sure!

    • bulldog76 says:

no no they would be about 120 to 200 bucks 😀

      • jrt 82 says:

        Dude.
The Arc’teryx LEAF Thong cost $526 USD and that is not even Multicam.
I love the look of their stuff but unless I win the lotto I have to pass.

  44. i’d buy two, and get them shipped here to Australia, easy.

  45. Stefan S. says:

Looks like a freakin hobbit in Mordor!

  46. JT says:

The cloak as pictured………not the mythical DK one has a ton of uses and the idea of supporting homeless vets is a no brainer. Put me on the list.

  47. Mate says:

    I’d buy two easy.

  48. casey says:

    another yes.

  49. Adam says:

Win win win in my opinion

  50. Marmatt says:
