MDM – SERKET – Filmbulvetr Snow Shoes

SERKET is introducing snow shoes from Norwegian company Filmbulvetr which is Old Norse for The Great Winter. How rad is that?

All stress testing is done at -40 Deg (oddly enough both Celsius and Fahrenheit intersect at minus 40). Manufactured from DuPont thermoplastic, there aren’t a lot of moving pieces yet there is both fore and aft as well as lateral movement in the binding, it will float 330 lbs vice the 250 lbs for most snow shoes.

US production is slated for Spring 2015.

it’s gonna break just like the MSR ones the Marine Corps uses (they couldn’t even handle Bridgeport in December). Straps look better than the MSRs, easier to manipulate with gloves on.

Love how you can judge it by one freakn photo. Test it, then you can tell me it will break.

    • John says:

MSR have improved their straps since the first generations (that were ordered by the corps).

I’ve been using mine heavily in winter treks for several years, and other than the little plastic retainers (that hold the excess lenght but are not a critical part) they’ve been holding great.

I got pretty excited about these awhile ago when the video came out, but was blown away by the price. hopefully it is more reasonable by now.

These snowshoes look very sexy, but I don’t think -40 is a cold enough test of the plastic…heck, when I was a kid, we would have to wait for the school bus colder than that. -40 is just where things start getting serious.

I’ll keep my pair of original Sherpa aluminum and neoprene showshoes at the ready! (Sherpas have long been out of print, wish someone would put them back in production).

I have some friends who have used these, and they really liked them. Before seeing them in real life, I thought they looked too unstable, but my friends didn’t feel that way at all. They felt stable, and since they are real narrow on the inside, you can basically walk with a normal spread with your legs.

Cool to see that Filmbulvetr is growing bigger!
