Tyr Tuesday – Jungle COMA System

When I saw TYR’s new Jungle COMA System at Warrior East slung across the back of a chair, the first thing that flashed through my mind was ‘Soldier 95’. The COMA was completely kitted out for use. The basis of this modular design has been around for ages but lately, such rigs have only been offered as stand alone items. What I like about TYR’s entry into the Jungle Patrol Rig arena is that they’ve developed a full set up including the ability to add hard armor plates.

TYR Jungle Load Carriage Harness

The heart is the TYR Tactical Jungle Load Carriage Harness, a lightweight, adaptable platform which can scaled up or down depending on mission requirements. The Jungle Mesh Yoke accepts their complete line of Assaulters Zip-On Platforms and also holds a 50 oz. hydration bladder when needed. The Jungle Load Carriage MOLLE Belt provides ample space for the new line of Jungle Pouches and Accessories. Antimicrobial/FR treated padded spacer mesh is used internally for comfort.

There are three common system components common to all applications:
• Jungle Load Carriage Yoke – Mesh
• Jungle Load Carriage Belt – MOLLE
• Tactical Base Belt – D

Colors: MultiCam, Coyote Brown & Ranger Green

I actually love the fact that Tyr included 4 columns of PALS on the belt instead of the typical 3 or 2.

    • albi says:

Majority of the belts on the market have 2 columns of PALS for a reason – they’re not supposed to be a jungle-long-distance-patrol-type-belt-kit-or-whatever.

    • albi says:

Not that I’m bashing Tyr – this stuff looks like an awesome kit.

  2. BAP45 says:

Reminds me of the British kit a bit

    • 53GR says:

Exactly. I like the idea of new, uber-lightweight materials being used, but the price point on this system is VERY steep.

  3. Jake says:

i understand the concept, but that harness looks like a dutch oven! I would cook in all that airmesh. then there is the fact you would have to burn the rig before coming home, Aint no body got time to pick the seeds out of that thing!

the baja style pouches and plug in plate bag are winners though! remove the heat sponge and im in

    • Jon, OPT says:

      Agreed,

Way too much torso coverage, almost makes wearing a external frame pack pointless. I wouldn’t want to wear this in the tropics or sub-tropics, but what do I know, I only worked in them for 12+ years.

Yes it does look hot, but if it starts a trend of more brit like kit, I am in

      • Stu says:

Spot-on. Meanwhile our enemies will continue to wear Chicom chest-racks and continue to run circles around guys wearing stuff like this.

  4. Strike-Hold says:

Definitely seeing some British influence there – which ain’t a bad thing. 😉

    • Dave says:

I have to agree. The belt, utility and ammo pouches look a lot like some of custom British offerings (British tactical and JayJay’s come to). Tyr making similar now is great. Ive been importing British stuff for personal use but having berry compliant versions really makes a difference.

      • SSD says:

My first Yoke like this came from Arktis back in 90 when David still owned the company.

        • Strike-Hold says:

I remember those. That Yoke, their triple Kidney Pouches, and their “Northern Ireland” chest rig were big innovations back in the day.

          • SSD says:

Had the yoke and kidney pouches but used the 42 pattern webbing rather than the 45.

        • Bradkaf308 says:

Still have my chest rig & kidney pouches. Still used occasionally

  5. Luke says:

    lots of interesting features here.
I did the longer 4-channel pad, with that much contact area I bet there is a lot less flop in the whole system, especially the buttpack.

the double straps from the harness is very british, and also looks very stable. The lower back pocket is especially interesting to me, the way it attaches looks like it would really lock in the whole rig and carry better then most.

  6. PLiner says:

I have been using an original TYR COMA system for several years and am happy with it.

However, having spent an inordinate amount of time humping in the jungle, I can say that this “jungle coma” makes no sense to me.

As others have stated, too much material on the back/yoke and the added MOLLE on the belt is bound to make it a sweat box in real jungle environments.

The ability to add a plate is a cool feature but again, it looks like it would be uncomfortable, even if you just wore it from the ORP to the OBJ and back.

If this was any thing BUT a jungle specific system I could see it working but there is no way I’d wear this version of the COMA over the old COMA system in the jungle. And I definitely wouldn’t call it a “jungle” system.
