Apparently, Kirk Douglas was slated to portray COL Trautman in “First Blood” but left due to script differences. Since Douglas was replaced by Richard Crenna, all we have is this portrait by illustrator Drew Struzman, meant to be used for promotional purposes.
The script differences were that he thought Trautman should kill Rambo at the end of the movie. There is a cut scene where Rambo uses Trautman’s 45 yo self terminate white Trautman holds the gun.
Maybe Kirk didn’t want to be portrayed as a Navy captain in a green beret.

Oh yeah, I saw it. A truly epic cinematic experience.
Looks like he would have been Sergeant Trautman from that drawing.
If you’d seen the movie, you’d know that they screwed up the beret for Crenna as well.
