Dog Tag Sized Pocket MultiTool with Ferro Rod Striker

PDW’s popular dog tag sized pocket tool returns in a second variation with an expanded field craft capability and made in S35VN. This variation features their proprietary Strikeback™ tool function which is designed to strike ferrocerium rods to create a shower of sparks in fire making. This pocket tool is as versatile as it could be with the available real estate of a dog tag profile. This Dog Tag Tool variant features PDW’s proprietary “universal” wrench which fits both standard and metric hardware, a low profile bottle cap lifter, ¼” bit driver, battery bay driver, Strikeback™, crisp precise CNC mill work, jimping, and a durable multistage industrial finish. The PDW Enhanced Dog Tag Tool with Strikeback™ is a feature rich compact pocket tool for EDC and the field.

The Enhanced Dog Tag Tool with Strikeback™ uses the premium blade alloy of S35VN. It also includes a MILSPEC stainless steel ball chain so the tool can be worn around the neck. The key ring hole allows use with a split ring and attached to a key ring or lanyard. The Enhanced Dog Tag Tool with Strikeback™ will be an evergreen product for Prometheus Design Werx.

The Design and R&D Team at PDW states:

“When we set out to create and design our first pocket tool, we focused on a size and silhouette that most of us recognized in America, the US Military Dog Tag. Not only is this a familiar profile, but from a design perspective it already met some basic criteria for compactness (dimensions and size) relative to usability, i.e. ergonomics. We then proceeded to create the design and functional requirements of all that could be fit within these dimensions. We pursued a higher standard in manufacturing by precision milling this pocket tool instead of taking mass production shortcuts of stamping and heavy tumbling. Our outcome is far more refined, crisp, and precise. The addition of our proprietary Strikeback™ tool was a logical progression in the additional functionality for this
pocket tool. Our choice of S35VN was a decision of using one of the finest stainless blade alloys
currently available. Small, and discreet, this stands tall when it comes to function, features and is indispensable when you need it.”

The PDW Enhanced Dog Tag Tool with Strikeback will be available for purchase on Thursday, April 28, 2016 @ 1300 PST via their website, prometheusdesignwerx.com.

Military aviators in for stronger, lighter, easier-to-use NVG mount system

For more than 30 years, night vision goggle (NVG) helmet mounts and battery packs used in military aviation have experienced few changes. After looking at the strengths and weaknesses, two leaders in aviation innovations, Aviation Specialties Unlimited (ASU) and Wilcox Industries, joined forces to build the next generation of easy-to-operate mounts and battery packs.

Unveiled at Heli-Expo 2016, ASU’s new NVG helmet mount and battery pack is lighter, smaller, easier to setup, and more durable than previous models. One of the most significant improvements allows users to mount NVGs to their helmet more easily with the use of just one hand.

“Operators of the new NVG mount and battery pack will need little or no training,” said Justin Watlington, Chief Pilot at ASU. “The transition will be seamless.”

He added that the companies addressed several issues with the legacy NVG mounts which included reoccurring breakage. “One problem that we saw time and again was cracking and breaking of the sidebars on the goggle mount,” He said. “While working through the Wilcox Industries engineering process, we resolved this and several other issues that resulted in a far more durable mount.”

Unlike current NVG mounts, Justin explained that the new design allows for the replacement of the broken part, not the entire unit and at a fraction of the cost. It’s greater endurance, seamless training transition and reduced wear from day-to-day use is a budget-friendly upgrade.

Testing is already underway on the mount and battery pack, which exceeds DO-275 and Technical Standard Order C-164 standards. ASU anticipates receiving certification in the fall of 2016 and pricing will be announced when full production begins this fall.

Hill People Gear – qui-Ya Backpack

Wednesday, April 27th, 2016

The qui-Ya is Hill People Gear’s dedicated large volume multiday internal frame backpack. It is built on the same heavy duty chassis as the Ute backpack, but with a 28” frame and 29.5” overall height as well as a larger diameter bag. This yields an approximate ~5500 ci volume (conservatively). At a weight of 6.25lbs, the qui-Ya has a very favorable weight to volume / load capacity ratio.

The pack bag consists of a main compartment, 1.5” tall zippered top pocket, generous wand pockets, and a Velcro loop field on the underside of the zippered top lid. Materials include 1000d cordura on the suspension side and bottom, hypalon details, and 500d cordura for the rest. The chassis is dual 7000 series aluminum stays landed in the included Prairie Belt, HPG’s signature contoured shoulder harness, and an HDPE framesheet. The qui-Ya is made in the USA by FirstSpear out of US materials.

Just like its little brother the Ute, the qui-Ya can be expanded with a selection of optional back pockets depending on the user’s needs. The addition of a back pocket increases volume and organization, but it also turns the pack into a load hauler frame as the situation warrants. The HPG-original pulley compression system controls load very effectively and also allows the pack to be collapsed to nearly empty while still maintaining excellent load cohesion.

Retail price for the new pack is $450 and it will be available by mid-May directly from Hill People Gear. Color choices include – two tone ranger / khaki and two tone foliage / manatee. Email info@hillpeoplegear.com if you would like to be notified when this pack is available. Please specify color choice.
