Sneak Peek – SureFire Blank Safety Device

This is the SureFire Blank Safety Device. It attaches and detaches exactly like an issue SureFire SOCOM suppressor and features the same size and weight. Naturally, it also fits on all SureFire SOCOM flash hiders.  That’s the beauty of this Blank Safety Device, it works just like the live fire version.

This one in particular is ported for the SOCOM issue M4A1 14.5″ barrel URG. It has an internal spud that tightens unto the muzzle with the thumb wheel embedded in the side of the suppressor-style body. This bullet trap technology safely captures a 3-round burst as you can see in the barrel cross-section above.

The Blue color identifies it is meant for the M4 carbine and the MK18 BSD version is Yellow in color. Part number SF-BSD-556-M4.

I like it but…….. at over $300 a pop makes it cost prohibitive to outfit the whole unit, and who really wants to fire blanks anyways? I got it, time/place/scenario, but I do prefer sims in cases where you could use blanks. Nothing drives a point home about cover than a little bit of pain to the system.

I like this design but I certainly hope that Surefire doesn’t expect SOCOM to buy one for every barrel, we have buying/pooling strategies for that.

I think one of the biggest benefits is that you’re only making a one-time payment of $300/person for insurance. The weight is neat, the attachment point is awesome, but the fact that it gobbles up a three round burst is the key in my opinion.

A sim bolt carrier group won’t accept live ammo. Blanks require the use of the the standard BCG, allowing for live ammo to mistakenly be loaded.

Blanks without MILES is a good way to train that you don’t really need to use cover and that you don’t need to aim. Is this MILES compatible will it block the laser?

And do the cool guys even use blanks and not Sims and live fire? Solution looking for a problem

Good MILES training always has referees with God Guns. Ideally, prick NCOs from a sister company who don’t suffer fools quietly. The newer MILES systems put the transmitter pretty far above the bore, making boresighting even MORE important (folk who boresight their MILES equipment continue to be the exception).

Far as solutions in search of problems, I’ll just leave this here: http://www.safety.marines.mil/Portals/92/Lessons%20Learned/Blank%20Fire%20LL_20140211.pdf

This is a 2014 publication. Featuring competent shooters who you woulda thunk knew better. Every service has these stories (Army requires a CAC and a stool sample to get to the Safety Center of Excellence and Equity web site), Marines put it out there where people who need it can find it.

i’ve already seen 75th run the yellow ones a while back. can’t believe nobody thought of making a can-styled bfa before.

IIRC AAC also used (or maybe they still do) to make a M4-2000 shaped BFA. Had the same feature of being able to contain live ammo.
