    Is it the p320?

    • Grant says:

It’s the P320, However, who knows what exact variant it’ll be or what changes they made (manual safety?) or even what caliber they offered. I have a feeling the details will emerge very soon.

    • ptmccain says:

Yes P320 with an external safety. In two colors, the more traditional dark one and this FDE model.

  2. BAP45 says:

Wait… for real? This isn’t some kind of April fools thing?

  3. Brian says:

    why?!?

  4. Mark G. says:

The government NEVER fails to live down to my expectation. Modular + Handgun + System = FAIL

    • Matthew Levi says:

Just wait till they award CHICKENHAWK!!!! a contract for DERPA holsters to carry the gun in and it will negate any positive that the P320 had.

Not surprised and yet surprised that Sig won. Expected FNH or S&W solely for the ability to have a safety or the DA/SA stupidity. The Glock would of had to fight so much institutional issues to win, it would of been a miracle.

      • PNWTO says:

What institutional issues? I think it can be fairly said the Glock has a very good tenure in SOCOM and that isn’t changing. Many stakeholders in the MHS used the SOCOM program for the Glock 19 as something the MHS should be scrapped in favor of.

        • SN says:

          External safety for one.

        • Matthew Levi says:

PNWTO – how the handgun is taught and used by non SOCOM types. For example look at the “Groundbreaking” handgun program the Marines rolled outa couple years back. Lightyears behind current knowledge in the industry and yet by all accounts ahead of what was and is being taught.

Not saying I have any solutions at all, as my lane is LE and we have so many of the same issues – people who sholdn’t carry a gun carrying a gun and as such training programs tweaked to ensure those people can keep carrying a gun.

        • straps says:

What SOCOM likes ain’t what the Larger Service likes by a long shot.

It takes way more hours (and rounds) than most Conventional commands will allocate to weapons training (and the combative mindset) essential to preventing NDs.

Between Beretta, Glock and Sig, my under-trained ass can run a Sig better than the other two. Sample of one. I wonder if an equally under-trained selection body had the same experience…

        • Brad says:

The Sig Sauer P226 MK25, P228 and P938 have also been carried by SOCOM for years too.

      • PPGMD says:

The P320 was offered with a safety for the MHS. Not sure if that is what the Army selected.

  5. jjj0309 says:

    OH BOY HERE WE GO

  6. SamHill says:

    Which gun, I wonder.

  7. Diddler says:

I played with it this week. It’s cool.

  8. JPW says:

    Modular Handgun SIGstem!

  9. Gabe says:

They did the smart thing! My P320 has been my favorite striker fired handgun of all time. I have shot it side by side with many others including the HK VP and it flat out kicks ass in every way over any I’ve compared to.
Well done Army, you did the right thing. I thought for sure you were going to go Glock and non-modular.

    • Demetrius says:

I’m glad the P320 worked for you, but for many of us, we’ve been burned by SIG’s quality control (or lack thereof).

Doubtful military handgun training is going to substantially improve soon. The money spent could’ve been out to greater use by buying M9A3’s and spending the rest on training and improved maintenance.

      • SSD says:

For what SIG is charging, you couldn’t have upgraded your M9s.

        • PPGMD says:

If I am reading what was released correctly including training, spare parts, everything else it is coming to about $1,000 a pistol.

          • tcba_joe says:

It includes the ammo and depots worth of spare parts, and mags. The actual per pistol cost hasn’t been published yet.

  10. Weaver says:

Now watch as the Army adopts the pistol but sets aside zero time or money or effort into transition training or ammo – and we breed another generation of Soldiers who cannot shoot their pistols for crap, and who think the gun is the problem as a result.

Happened with the M1911, happened with the M9, and it will happen again.

Even bayonets get more training time than pistols for the vast majority of the Army.

    • straps says:

That’s 100% command discretion at the O-6/O-7 level.

I walked off a job where the ammo allocation for a unit going into harms way was put on the table for the (never-deployed) RM to trade.

Granted, Mob Site is a completely different allocation, but guess where Mob Site trimmed training to ensure everyone flew with up-to-date dental work and Cultural Sensitivity training? Yup, range time–specifically “secondary” weapons (only “assigned” for 5% of the unit by the Cold War paradigm)–even as the biggest hazard downrange was Green on Blue inside the wire at pistol distances.

Completely validates your point, but most joes know the name of the commander that set them up for failure in that area. We like to blame “cultures” and presume the decisions were made above the level of people we hope know better.

    • PJ says:

I thought the Army completely discountinued bayonet training several years ago?

  11. Gerard says:

Expect Sig to become the new H&K because you Suck and…

  12. SGT Heintz says:

SIG? WTF? I just threw up I’m my mouth. Doesn’t SIG stand for Sub-par Imitation Glock?

  13. Jon says:

Pistols are for swoopie people. I never thought in my grunt brain, “Boy I wish I had a 9mm right now in this firefight.” I am excited to hear that Sig Sauer has this contract but handguns are a not priority in the world I know.

    • Stu says:

I feel exactly the same way as Jon anf I would like to echo some similar feelings that straps has above.

My last years in the Army I noticed a very large neglect when it came to even anything related to a rifle, range time (especially), and even simple classes as well. There was a larger and inappropriate attention towards hand to hand combat, when we train for an attack that has already been allowed to happen. I am NOT speaking about company level, the message is well above that level, and its speaks of a larger neglect when the training focus is either in the wrong direction or in the case of a new pistol contract, the wrong direction.

It’s the proper training that is needed, and the money and attention is needed there.

It’s the indian, not the arrow.

  14. Adam B says:

    With what gun?

  15. John says:

I am surprised by reading a lot of the comments. Sig only listened to what listed as the needs for a pistol to replace the M9. If I remember correctly, Sig came in second behind Beretta 92F when they did this back in the 70’s to replace the 1911. I was a big fan of DA/SA pistols and the why they shot, but they were that next generation replacing the 1911. Now with the next generation of striker fired pistols, there are so many choices out there. So are some people sad that their favorite pistol did not get picked? Probably. What you should be asking yourself with your favorite manufacturer is why have they not made any major changes to their platforms. Going from one year to the next just to release what they call the next generation with a couple of changes is not going to win awards.

Is modular the right way to go? That is what they deemed as the next step to make it easier and cheaper in the long run to maintain a pistol. The long term costs also include training and having skilled armors in place.

  16. Marcus says:

Congrats to SIG. Any of their pistols I’ve owned or used has been reliable.

I just hope Big Green finally starts to revamp the entire training system and allocates more funds to get the job done.

  17. JSGlock34 says:

The models in the picture look optics-ready. That’s very progressive for the Army. I’m surprised.

  18. Captain Merica says:

Holy crap you guys, can you show me on the doll where Sig violated you?

In defense of the whiners, Sig has a recent history of pitching modular platforms and never actually making those modular components available after the fact. However, the P320 seems like the first platform they actually made good on that selling point and the new contract should only further bolster availability on that front.

  19. Hubb says:

I like that the MHS is tan colored. Hopefully rifles and light machine guns will be next…

    • Diddler says:

Yeah the tan gun above with safety switches is the one I played wth this week. There is a push in the army the move to more tan items.

  20. SLAP says:

If I’m not mistaken the SIG also won the DHS ICE handgun contract….smells like a fix!

  21. SamHill says:

Just hit 8k rounds on my p320 carry gun this week. It has a great trigger, the finish has held up well, it’s reliable, easy to carry and disassemble. Only things changed were installing trijicon HD sights and a new recoil spring at 5k rounds. Great pistol.
