NAVAIR Approves Massif’s 2-Piece Flight Suit-Military

Based on a recent compelling need from the fleet, NAVAIR pulled out all of the stops to quickly approve the Sage Green version of Massif’s 2-Piece Flight Suit-Military, for use within the US Navy and Marine Corps.

Manufactured from Burlington’s Sigma 4-Star fabric*, Massif developed a patented (U.S. Patent 9,015,864) attachment system which unites the two components together, allowing them to protect just like a flight coverall, leaving no exposed areas at the waist. This two-part system combines elastic loops found inside the Jacket with Velcro belt loops on the Pant which are passed through the loops.

In addition to using a great fabric, Massif worked with the user community to incorporate features across multiple branches and multiple platforms. There are lots of little details. For starters, it’s a good looking uniform, offering an athletic cut. They’ve also moved seams away from high wear areas at the shoulders, seat and down the front of the legs; areas that can irritate during a long crew day, particularly in hot environments.

There are different Velcro configurations for different user groups. All of the pocket zippers feature pull tabs and the left upper arm pocket incorporates a pen slot.

Another common feature for both jacket and pant are the mesh-lined pockets for heat mitigation. This also speeds up drying.

Finally, the lower legs feature longer donning and doffing zippers than I’ve seen on other suits.

Congratulations Noelle and Team Massif. Great design and best of kind materials.

  2. Keith says:

What was the recent compelling need?

    • SSD says:

Coveralls suck for multi crew position aircraft.

    • PPGMD says:

Looks like you don’t have to practically strip down to your underwear to take a dump.

      • SSD says:

In a coverall you do. With this, it’s just like wearing pants.

        • PPGMD says:

That is what I meant other than a couple of velcro straps it should operate like normal pants. And since they are separate garments you can probably offer a wider assortment of sizes for people that don’t fit the normal sizing profiles. Seems like a win win to me.

    Hey Army, take notice!

    • some other joe says:

Not being an aviator, what does this do that A2CU doesn’t? Practically, does it do anymore than eliminate camouflage?

If not, what is the price differential and is it worth it to upgrade?

      • SSD says:

Comfort…it costs more, but it’s more comfortable.

        • Jeremy says:

No zipper on the knee. Significantly better collar. No stupid flaps over the chest pockets. No stupid Velcro flap over the zipper. Hopefully not the stupid seams on your ass that rip open before anything else on the uniform wears out. Leg zippers.
Looks like a great pant for pilots, while something more like their combat pant would be great for crew chiefs.

  4. Nick M says:

I thought my A2CU were plenty comfy. Could be cold but we had plenty of layers we could add FREE, long johns, flight jacket-

    • ThatBlueFalcon says:

Minus the velcro on the waist pockets… I always cut that out.

    • SSD says:

The A2CU hasn’t been updated since the early 90s. It’s essentially BDUs with extra pockets and a belt at the waist of the Jacket.

      • Steve Z says:

I’m not one to usually disagree with you, but this is like saying the ACU is essentially the BDU with different pockets. The A2CU is the same cut and layout as the ACU plus the extra pockets. I even had to change jacket sizes.

Minor, but you are also glossing over the change from all velcro (that always ripped out) to zippers on the pants in the early 2000s.

  5. Loopy says:

    Cool, skinny flightsuits

  6. TPT1731 says:

It looks pretty sharp, I would snag up a non FR jacket for personal use.

  7. Robert says:

It’s not easy to properly update a longtime standard, but it looks as though Massif has done just that. Excellent work, gentlemen.

  8. Kush says:

What will these have that the Drifire 2-piece flights didn’t have? I wear tested the Drifire one piece and 2 piece flight suits. it was Ok but a. It was a solution looking for a problem, and b. they were veeeerrryyyy expensive when compared to the standard nomex one piece.
No knock on MASSIF, I have their Elements and Battleshield x jackets and pants, but as was said I don’t see a “critical need” for this that will justify the additional cost, and these will be spendy that’s for sure.

  9. Luke says:

This looks super solid all around, but those bicep pockets in particular give me all kinds of warm fuzzies.

  10. Chris from Cali says:

Anyone want to start taking bets that these see wider adoption as soon as they show up in a Michael Bay movie…?
