Magpul Suppressor Cover – 5.5”

The Magpul® Suppressor Cover – 5.5” is the first product of its kind able to stand up to the extreme temperatures caused by extended strings of semi-automatic and automatic fire and still protect the user against burns by keeping internal can temperatures at safe levels and cool-off times short. The Magpul® Suppressor Cover – 5.5” is made up of a heat-resistant polymer sleeve overlaid onto a raised stainless steel heat shield that mounts directly to the suppressor body with steel clamps. It minimizes heat transfer to keep external cover temperatures up to 1000 degrees F cooler than the surface of the suppressor by allowing high volumes of cooling airflow across the can, reducing retained heat and the damage it can cause. Our Suppressor Cover withstands USSOCOM suppressor abuse requirements and numerous cycles of suppressor surface temperatures over 1300 degrees F with ease, all while allowing you to sling your rifle without burns or melted clothing. The Magpul Suppressor Cover is also an enhanced thermal insulator and signature reduction device, which significantly mitigates negative visible mirage effects to the shooter’s sight picture, reduces external suppressor body impact damage, and lessens the chance of accidental contact injury or other heat-related damage to personnel or equipment during weapon firing or cool down. Optimized for 1.5” outer diameter round suppressors with a body length of approximately 5.5” (not including attachment hardware/ interface) such as the Surefire SOCOM556-RC2.  Other lengths are in the works and are coming soon.

It’s a weird cultural phenomenon that people in the tactical industry improperly use the term “fitment” like that. I’ve never seen it used anywhere else.

    • SPQR476 says:

“Fitment- A thing fitted to another”

You also see it in automotive accessories and other consumer products categories where a product performing an essentially identical function must interface with different makes or models of the host product. Or something.

  2. JB says:

So is this the only real working suppressor cover that is rated for full auto on the market?

If this thing has no fabric then that means it will not hold any water…..all that steam coming off a suppressor cover when it gets wet is not fun once you start shooting.

Hopefully suppressor companies can license this and build it into their suppressors. Like a modular system that can be removed, added on, etc.

    • SPQR476 says:

JB, it’s the only can cover that will survive the USSOCOM stress test of 8 mags, repeatedly, especially without destroying the can. We HIGHLY recommend that you don’t do that to your can. The Magpul cover will be fine, but that’s just abusive on a rifle can, and many bare cans won’t survive the test. You can of course get anything hot enough to cause problems if you try. You can melt a barrel, so no cover is indestructible. But…this passes muster for those tests parameters, and also meets the 5 mags, 170 degrees through a layer of fabric SURG requirement, if anyone is curious.

Aww yeah…it’s that time of year when all the cool stuff is advertised. On a serious note, this design is awesome and I will have need of a couple this year.

  4. Justin says:

Your article is inaccurate. Manta Defense has been producing a suppressor sleeve capable of full auto fire. The Manta sleeve is also universal and can fit any sleeve between 1.5” -1.85”. It does withstand high heat as well. Magpul is NOT the first company to produce this product, Manta Defense is.

    • Justin says:

Fit any suppressor between 1-5” – 1-85”. Excuse my typo.

    • SSD says:

Their claim is that they are the first cover to survive the SOCOM 8 magazine test.

      • SPQR476 says:

Indeed. You can wrap a can in kleenex and it will technically “survive full auto fire” for a brief period. The 8 mag test puts can temperature at crazy levels, and in reality, it’s pretty much there after 6 mags. And the test is not all full auto…just fairly rapid and sustained fire with a little FA thrown in. The tricks are the cover surviving those temps, and also, not holding in so much heat as to cause the can to fail. There are many cans that won’t survive this test bare, let alone covered, so we don’t recommend doing it at home. That’s what the Magpul cover does that no one else does. The Manta cover was pretty much your only option if you wanted to be able to fire more than a couple mags previously, within the limitations of a lot of retained heat, and eventually the silicone breaks down from direct contact with the can. We’ve got nothing against Frank or his product. If you’re only firing a few mags here and there, it certainly is more friendly to fit on a wider variety of can sizes. We were just approached with a fairly demanding set of requirements for a cover that had not been met by anything on the market yet. We provided a solution. It works very well, and prevents the extra thermal abuse on your can.

I spoke to the team at Gemtech at shot show 2017 about the Manta. They tested it, do NOT recommend it and laughed at the full auto claim. It traps all the heat into the suppressor and can cause damage to the suppressor. I got an Armageddon gear cover and a Coletech cover instead for single fire. Looks like it’s time to upgrade!

          • Justin says:

Manta Defense works very hard at producing a product that is engineered and manufactured to the highest standards. There are many factors that contribute to how hot a suppressor actually gets and what a suppressor cover can withstand. It is not only rate of fire but also the type of ammo used, the length of barrel, the type of firearm, the type of can, the age of the can, etc. Because of all of these variables no one person, company or test can call out what a particular product can withstand. Magpul has done a great job holding up to the SOCOM test and we wish them the best of luck with their new cover. Manta Defense will continue to produce products that will meet and exceed many user requirements out and we look forward to continuing to supply militaries around the world with our suppressor covers.

I have the manta for one of my cans. I refer to it as my NFA fleshlight.

  6. Benb says:

Very cool concept, but there is quite a weight penalty for it. If it could be made out of titanium instead of steel that would be preferable. Maybe even a non FA-rated one made out of aluminum.

  7. CH says:

I have the manta covers I love them I’ve ran semi and full never had a problem I’ve even seen on youtube a guy torch one and it wouldn’t burn maybe the magpul is ok but gem tech is crap. I prefer sliencerco and aac they work great with my manta covers! Nothing against magpul I’ve spent thousands on there stuff probably a good product.
