FORM3D Firearms Claims THEY Have The World’s Lightest Weight AR Grip

Last week, we showed you the Future Forged AR grip which they claimed is the world’s lightest at 1.2 oz.

The gauntlet has been thrown down. We were immediately contacted by FORM3D Firearms who told us about their TiDAL Feather Grip which is made entirely out of titanium with additive manufacturing and their heaviest variant is 1.1 oz.

Who has one lighter? Or is FORM3D Firearms the winner?

As cool as this is, it really is a dick pissing contest between companies. Any idiot with enough money can buy this. There is nothing terribly innovative outside the material used or the method it is made. From a pragmatic, user ended standpoint this is useless gucci crap. Never once while in did I look at the already hollowed out A2 grip and think well this needs to be different.

Good reporting and pics are always a plus, but the people making the product…really?

    • Derpaherp says:

Also, all I gotta say…recoil impulse?

“There is nothing terribly innovative outside the material used or the method it is made.”

This has to be one of the most contradictory statements I’ve read on SSD.

        • Bushman says:

Calling it “contradictory”, you should give your own definition of “innovation”. Because titanium powder sintering became quite widespread recently. There are even some online services offering 3D printing of titanium alloy. So, if “innovation” means something fundamentally new, it doesn’t apply to this product. It could only be applied to it if you make conditions super-tight, like “material and manufacturing method used for a very specific part”. While usually, doing something specific for the first time doesn’t necesserily count as an innovation. So, it looks more like a very expensive catch-up (with a questionable design). (Hint: look up “metal 3d printed handle” on Google Images.)

        • PPGMD says:

I agree with the quote, making something existing using new techniques isn’t innovative unless the new techniques bring something new to the part.

A good example of this is making a prosthetic socket using one of those carbon fiber weaving machines. Using said machine to make a new socket design that would be impossible with the previous mold lamination techniques (like a bulbous distal end and thinner at the knee), that is innovative.

Is this innovative? Meh… maybe, maybe not I’m not sure making something slightly lighter is innovative these days.

    • Jeremy P says:

You’re right, people should never dick around and try out new techniques. You should always remain immobile, never innovating or screwing around, always sticking to what has worked once and never try any harder again.

See, I can sound out of touch as well.

Looking at that already hollowed out hole…what exactly did you think? Oh wait, I was stuck at hollowed out hole and thought of the ex wife. Anyways, much like her already hollowed out hole, my thought goes to cleaning this AR grip after a dirty sesh of putting rounds down range in adverse conditions.

Morning dew + Dust + Tiny Crevices = heaviest grip on market

    • Mike B says:

Exactly what I was thinking. That thing looks like a junk magnet with all those crevices.

  3. jjj0309 says:

Looks oddly grotesque, I don’t want to hold it. It’s something like from horror movie. I’d gladly sacrifice few ounces to prevent occasional nightmares from holding that grip and feeling the Lovecraft texture.

    • Brutal Buddha says:

Would be Cthulhu’s first choice for sure, should he ever be in the market for custom AR grips lol..

  4. regularguy says:

Looks pretty strong… and made of Titanium, so it must be awesome

  5. SShink says:

Also the most expensive AR grip on the market – additive manufacture titanium = $$$$

  6. Ejb3 says:

    Lighter does not equal better.

  7. Marcus says:

Any of these new skeleton grips have unlimited potential for FUBAR.

Gear snags, foreign objects, snags- and the list goes on.

I’ll save weight and material somewhere else. The average grips weighs between 2.4 and 3 ounces.

Looks like part of a MoMA exhibit.

I will be squirting the cavity full of spray cheez if I ever see anyone with this.

  10. CWG says:

Cant wait to see this on the next Jesse james rifle.

Ill just be over here with my 2$ A2 grip@2.6pz with the nub shaved off.

  11. Brando says:

This looks like it’s designed with Voronoi Fracturing or Delauny Triangulation?

    • straps says:

I bet a well-used RAID pack it’s Voronoi–there’s an app for generating 3D-printable/AM product in Autodesk.

WRT Delaunay, there’s just a bunch of questions on the user forums…

      Thanks for stopping by…

  12. Dellis says:

Kevin, AKA “BlackDagger666” on the “Clandestine Operator Forums” has his mom buy him this then claims at full sprint speed it whistles and will give his position away. So, back in his command center he wraps it in duct tape.

  13. AbnMedOps says:

Hmm. If left unattended, it might be an attractive place for various stingie-buggy things to build a nest. Get some some sort of African wasp sting right through your hand. Just thinking out loud, because once my desk-neighbor was an Army entomologist (Airborne)…
