Tampa Police Department Replaces Official Duty Pistol with SIG SAUER P320

Newington, N.H. (June 11, 2018) – SIG SAUER, Inc., is pleased to announce the Tampa Police Department will replace their official duty pistol from the Smith & Wesson M&P, to the SIG SAUER P320. The Tampa Police Department has over 1,000 sworn officers, covering three districts that encompass the entire municipality of Tampa, Florida.

“SIG SAUER is honored to earn the trust of the men and women of the Tampa Police Department through their selection of the P320 pistol as their official duty pistol,” began Tom Jankiewicz, Executive Vice president, Law Enforcement Sales, SIG SAUER, Inc. “The modularity of the P320, with its ability to select grip size, combined with the proven reliability, accuracy, and safety of the firearm made it the right choice for this diverse group of officers.”

The P320 is a modular, striker-fired pistol available in full-size, carry, compact, and subcompact sizing. The serialized trigger group makes the P320 adaptable to multiple caliber, size, and grip options. The P320 is available in 9mm, .357SIG, 40S&W, and .45ACP, with a choice of contrast, or SIGLITE Night Sights. The intuitive 3-point takedown requires no trigger pull for disassembly, and safety features include a striker safety, disconnect safety, and optional manual safety.

The Tampa Police Department will acquire 1,375, P320 pistols to replace their current Smith & Wesson M&P’s as the approved official duty pistol.

“We here at SIG SAUER are very proud to gain the confidence of the Tampa PD and assist them in safely carrying out their department’s mission – to reduce crime and enhance the quality of life through a cooperative partnership with all citizens,” concluded Jankiewicz.

But do they have the improved drop safe trigger installed?

  2. Mike says:

I’d be interested to know if Sig gave Tampa the same deal they gave Pasco County SO…swap the entire armory for free P320s.

    • Whit says:

Sig made my local PD a similar deal. An even swap for the Glock 22s they used for P320s. Then, they were able to sell the Glocks back to any officer that wanted them.

My local PD is happy with their Sigs.

    SIG needs these wins!

  4. Ton E says:

SSD any word on what caliber Tampa PD is using?

    • Mitchell says:

Zooming in on the gun and other FBI stats local PD are all going back to 9×19 and 380acp for back up. They found 40 and 45 have the same knock over power as the 9×19 because to have true knock over power you have to follow Newton’s first law of physics of every reaction has an equal and opposite reaction. So unless your pistol throws you back like the noisy cricket from mib your never going to have the powerful drop outside of a shotgun or 50AE. Even 357 magnum isn’t that well liked by police do to lack of speed on follow up shots in the same place.

      • Ton E says:

The picture alone doesnt mean they’re going with 9mm. The M&P’s they’re switching from are .40s and prior to using the M&P they used 9mm Glocks.

      • Ton E says:

Plus some agencies are going to 9mm as a result of the FBI going with 9mm. But some are sticking with .40, .357 SIG, etc. Not every state and local agency is going to jump when the FBI does.

      • Winkler says:

The FBI never said that the nine had as much knockdown power as the 40 it said using plus P ammunition that it was good enough and in actual mangagements FBI agents only had a 20% hit rate so they figured it was better to have two more rounds in the magazine nobody’s actually reading the report they just want to jump on the line 9 mm band wagon. nines are great for competition and cheaper to shoot but no defensive caliper should start with less than a 4.

        • Ian cornell says:

I don’t use calipers as a defensive weapon, but if I do I’ll make sure they are adjusted to at least .40, because .355 is such a astronomically smaller number

        • Jester says:

Winkler don’t be that guy. We had enough of that mindset back in the 70s and 80s.

        • Ed says:

Interesting since .22LR usually has a pretty high use “firearms deaths” each year.

    • CRBR says:

      4.3% ABV

There is so much wrong there my head hurts just trying to catalog it all.

  6. Sheriff Shawn Mobley says:

We made the switch to the Sig P320 RX as well. We tested it against the Glock (which e previously issued) and Smith M&P as well, and it performed superior to the others.

  7. Anthony Gonzalez says:

But do they take Glock mags?

  8. Stash says:

Dugan/Carnik Con’s video about the P320 is all you need to know about it.

  9. James Biasella says:

Are the officers allowed to choose their caliber?
I would think they would choose the .40….

  10. patrick sweeney says:

Dugan/Carnik? There’s three minutes of my life I’ll never get back. (Correct, I didn’t even finish the first one.)

    • Stash says:

Come now, everyone can get a chuckle out of the Operator Hotline. The man is a legend, he trolled the ATF in real life at Shot a few years ago.
