Sneak Peek – Possible US Army SCW Prototype from Maxim Defense

Over the weekend we told you that the US Army had issued a Prototype Opportunity Notice, reviving their requirement for a 9mm Sub Compact Weapon for its Personal Security Detachments which protect High Risk commanders and key personnel in the US and overseas.

we had checked outMaxim Defense’s new SCW stock during TRIGGRCON and asked them if they were going to participate in this PON. They told us they had already taken a look at the requirement and combining their existing Sub Compact Weapon Stock (SCW) with a Maxim 9mm bolt assembly, which shaves 4 inches off the buffer length, they were able to make it just under the 15″ overall length stipulated in the PON. The prototype seen here is outfitted with a Krink-style muzzle device and uses Glock magazines.

Not just enough to build it, they took the prototype out back, firing a 2 inch group at 35 meters from its 5.5 inch barrel, well within the accuracy desired by the Army.

Wouldn’t it be logical to have this feed from P320 magazines instead of Glock? That way of the sidearm you are most likely carrying would have interchangeability with your PDW.

I was thinking the same thing, esp if this is going to big Army.

      • George says:

Because Rangers and advisors and most of the personnel in the regionally aligned advisor brigades mostly get Glocks. The new M-17 is going to some brigades but slowly, and many are skeptical that the M-17 MHS program will arm a significant number of soldiers soon.

  2. Gerard says:

That would make sense perhaps the final version will use 320 mags

While I understand that a stock adds stability I can’t see limiting the barrel to just 5″. It seems like a waste, but then again the whole program is a giant waste of money and time, in my uneducated opinion.

  4. Joe says:

It’s supposed to primarily run subsonic 147 gr, so a longer barrel doesn’t do anything but make it harder to conceal.

Pretty niche, doubt most will ever see one.

  5. Nate says:

Thats a funny looking MP5K… In this case, why don’t we just go back to the proven, reliable platforms that were abandoned for the CQBR/MK18? I would think most would sooner see a modernized MP-5 variant adopted over any 9mm AR based weapon.

    • Joe_K says:

Because HK stopped making MP-5’s, and we’re not giving $ to Pakistan for our PSD teams PDW’s. A 9x19mm MP7 on the other hand…

  6. Steve says:

That’d be a 4 inch group at 35 m… not 2 inches. Not exactly impressive.

I don’t see a huge issue with the barrel length given the caliber, but I don’t know why you wouldn’t just make a stock system for the P320 given the low bar being set here…

  7. SpankDaddyCool says:

5″ barrel in a PDW is soo much more effective that a 5″ barrel pistol. Army PSD teams really need this weapon system, a 10.5 M4 would totally ruin their lopro package of egg beater antenna, helmet, and ridiculously large bumpers. Now they will cross green zones worldwide completely unnoticed. Especially if they add a local scarf to the dash.
