Sumter, South Carolina Police Department Transitions to P320 and P365 Pistols

Sumter, South Carolina Police Department Transitions to Complete SIG SAUER Platform with P320 and P365 Pistols

Newington, N.H. (October 25, 2018) – SIG SAUER, Inc. is proud to announce the Sumter Police Department in Sumter, South Carolina has adopted both the SIG SAUER P320, and the P365 pistols, chambered in 9mm, as their official duty pistols.

The Sumter Police Department is a full-service law enforcement agency comprised of seven divisions with 120 sworn officers protecting over 40,000 citizens.

“The decision for us to transition from our GLOCK pistols to a complete SIG SAUER system was based on quality, performance, and safety. In testing we put the P320 and the P365 through the paces and, quite impressively, they both performed beyond expectations throughout our rugged testing requirements,” said Captain Michael Evans, Support Services, Sumter Police Department.

“Additionally, the modularity of the P320 allows our officers to choose a grip based on comfort without the addition of bulky backstraps, and we are really seeing the benefits of this feature in higher qualifying scores,” said Evans. “As for our detectives, the P365 is the perfect pistol because of the small size and high-capacity which makes it easy to conceal without sacrificing rounds. The P365 will also be placed into service as our agency issued backup firearm to replace the current GLOCK 43.”

The SIG SAUER P320 is a modular, striker-fired pistol available in full-size, carry, compact, and subcompact sizing. The serialized trigger group makes the P320 adaptable to multiple caliber, size, and grip options. The P320 is available in 9mm, .357SIG, 40S&W, and .45ACP, with a choice of contrast, or SIGLITE Night Sights. The intuitive 3-point takedown requires no trigger pull for disassembly, and safety features include a striker safety, disconnect safety, and optional manual safety.

The SIG SAUER P365 is an everyday, concealed carry pistol. This high capacity micro-compact pistol is smaller and lighter than other pistols in its class. It features a high-capacity, patented modified double-stack magazine for a 10+1 full-size capacity, with 12-round factory made magazines available for 13-round capacity.

“The Sumter Police Department is our first agency to simultaneously adopt both the P320 and the P365 pistols as their official duty firearms and we could not be more excited about it,” added Tom Jankiewicz, Executive Vice President, law Enforcement Sales, SIG SAUER, Inc. “The P320 features unprecedented modularity and safety, and the P365 truly offers the ultimate in concealment combined with a full-size carry capacity. The features of both of these pistols is very desirable to law enforcement agencies, and we could not be more pleased to have them recognized by the men and women of the Sumter Police Department in their choice to transition to SIG SAUER.”

The Sumter Police Department will replace their current issue GLOCK pistols with the SIG SAUER P320 and P365 pistols. Local distributor Lawmen’s Distribution LLC in Columbia, South Carolina will provide product locally.

All of the departments in Northern KY who went to the Sig 320 platform switched back to Glock quickly. Hopefully they worked out the kinks

Could you please name them for our other readers?

Greensboro PD, in Greensboro NC, has swapped to Glock after a horrible experience with the P320. This is a department who “upgraded” from other Sig models that they were happy with. The pistols simply wouldn’t run. Almost every course of fire on the range resulted in multiple malfunctions. Sig initially suggested this was operator related and suggested multiple “fixes” that did not improve performance. The same thing occurred with new shooters in the Academy, experienced patrol officers, and even SWAT. Sig sent out vendor reps and even their engineers, who swapped out mags, springs, tried different lubes, and thorough cleaning, and could not get them to run well. GPD ultimately decided to cut bait and swap to something that consistently runs well. Similar reports have filtered in from other agencies. It’s the worst kept secret in LE.

NKY PD. How many depts could there possibly be? So all 3 officers switched.

    • J says:

I work in the City if Florence and Florence PD still carries the P320, and they’re fairly large for the area.

      • DP says:

I should’ve clarified that it was the departments on the Regional Swat from Kenton and Campbell county. One of them actually threw the ejector forward about 8 feet. Not sure how that happened. Sig offered them so cheap at the time they couldn’t refuse. Like I said that was awhile back so hopefully everything is worked out.

Exact opposite experience in ND, of the agencies I’m familiar with who have switched all are having good luck with them. Sig handled the replacement of current guns with the “upgraded” ones well. Officers I’ve talked to are all happy with them and the agencies have no plans to replace them before their service life is up. Guess individual millage may vary.

Right up the road from Sumter. Based on my experiences with the department, little testing was done and the good idea fairy gets all the credit. Maybe I’m wrong, but this wreaks of someone’s bad idea

    • PPGMD says:

How many agencies actually have money and knowledge to run a decent testing program? You can probably count them on one hand.

  3. Logan Crooks says:

120 Officers protecting 40,000? That’s a very well funded agency right there.

  4. Marcos Rivera says:

I have had my P320 sine March. I haven’t had any issues whatsoever. It has the upgrades including the Apex trigger, stainless recoil spring rod and other upgrades. It works flawless and it’s a tool I can depend my life on.

  5. Horshack says:

Bros! What about the kncokdown power? Are they as good as a 45? My TL will only carry a 45 because of it’s knockdown power! He made the switch from the Baretta after we did training in april.

    • .308 says:

Totally agree here, its all about the .45…. I dont have to think about shot placement with my trusty 1911!

      • Horshack says:

Right on bros! My TL didn’t get the chance to smoke any badguys in saudi with his Baretta! He was rocking 9 mil at the time but one time he shot ata hog with his 45 and that hog went sailing bro!

  6. Sig Shooter says:

I have both p320c and p365, have had 0 problems with either one, unfortunately my department makes us carry the Glock 17.

    • (O-3) Captain Obvious says:

You poor, poor soul. They could have picked a proven design with decades of service around the world with a sterling performance recor—wait a second!

  7. Eric says:

I used to carry a p365 for personal defense, every range trip resulted in several failure to feeds, failure to go into battery, or light primer strikes. I used several types of ammo (Winchester, Remington, geco, ppc, aguila, Seller and Bellot.

I can’t recommend any one carry these two sig products. (P365 & p320)
Sig quality just isn’t a thing anymore. I feel sorry for these officers who have to trust their lives with sub-standard products.

    • SSD says:

Tell us more. When did you purchase the firearm. Did you contact SIG about the issue? If so, what did they do?

  8. James says:

Have had a sig 1911 with 3 point jams. A Glock gen4 17 with ftf issues and slide wouldn’t lock on last round from factory. 365 issues we’re addressed and the gen 2 has been a great firearm.p320 gen 1 was just that.a gen 1. Glocks first 2 gens had plenty of issues. Arguing about your gun from either is like arguing over a Ford iver a Chevy.
