I know some of you Airmen are trying to game the system, but despite being referred to as a “boot” by several of the companies which sell it, the Altama Maritime Assault – Low is not a boot. It’s a shoe.
The problem is that the latest changes to AFI 36-2903 (Air Force Guidance Memorandum, AFGM2018-03 to AFI 36-2903, Dress & Appearance), intended to guide wear of the Operational Camouflaged Patterned Uniform and accouterments, no longer stipulates a boot height. However, AFI 36-2903 does say that “Dress and personal appearance standards that are not listed as authorized in the publication are unauthorized.”
So give it a rest and get a pair of boots. You’ll just look like hipster in these with your pants hem rolled up.

The Air Farce should be permitted to wear slippers instead of boots because slippers are more comfortable given the amount of time the Air Farce spends sitting down. They only need boots when they are line dancing anyway. Plus boots don’t go with the taffeta gowns pilots wear. Clashes with their make-up.
Yet, you are the one that used taffeta. A word that most people would have to look up to even know what it means. Congrats.

I’ve been running a pair of these hard for about a year. They do hold up well, but I’d honestly never consider using them for any military application where combat was a possibility. They’re alright for casual stuff – general walking about and such. They could certainly be pressed into some light CQB work (but don’t plan on kicking down a door with these). They actually make excellent boat shoes and are even great for walking on ice, boulder hopping and wet rocks. I personally feel they lack adequate ankle support, impact protection and especially crush protection. The high top version is better for beach stuff than the low cut version as sand tends to get kicked up and deposited into the back of the lead shoe when walking.
100% Agree with your assessment. They make fine casual shoes and id rather buy from Altama than other companies that produce casual shoes. My next pair will be the mids for sure.
I’ve got the mid-heights. Excellent for swampy muck, swimming off rocky shorelines, and working on the boat dock up at the lake! Sizing is weird however – I’m a 9.5 in all other boots (including Altama military boots), but I had to go to size 11 in the these.
The AFI hasn’t covered height in the 11 years I have been in and the “anything not covered is unauthorized gimmick doesn’t work for these as they meet all the “boot” requirements with nothing extra added.
Are you wearing them to work?
Nope. I’m strictly a Salomon and Lowa guy. I would discourage these only from the point that they look stupid in uniform and use that supervisor discretion.
Air Force has nothing to worry about, we don’t have old dudes at the door of the BX doing uniform checks like everybody else
