ORSM 18 – Mini Heroclip

Tuesday, July 24th, 2018

Once you get a hold of one of these gadgets you won’t want to go without it ever again. Soon to be available in three sizes, including this mini version, the Heroclip is a great way to hang various items from hooks or cords.

The Heroclip has a built-in hook that rotates 360° in either direction, folds at two joints and features a rubber tip on the end so your gear will stay put wherever you hang it. I’ve used mine in tents, hotel rooms, and public restroom stalls to keep my bag off the floor. There are also two larger sizes.

If you were a BattlBox subscriber you’d already have a RipSPOOL. Exotac recently released the first batch through the monthly subscription box service.

Equipped with a fire cord lanyard so you won’t lose it (and start a fire), RipSpool is a mini repair kit. In addition to an outer wrapping of over 4′ of Duct Tape, the end cap is wound with 60′ of 30 lbs test line.

When you unscrew the end cap, it contains a #16 sail needle which is mounted inside the end cap so that it can be used as an awl. Additional dead space inside, leaves room for fish hooks or other small items.

Thyrm Launches PyroVault

Thursday, May 24th, 2018

Sunnyvale, CA —

The metal fluid lighter has been around since the 1930’s. It’s a beloved piece of Americana. But it’s not without fault. Major complaints include the evaporation of fuel, slippery case and lack of an attachment method. Thyrm addresses these issues and takes the traditional metal lighter into the future with the PyroVault.

“We had a blast designing modern-day armor for the classic, fluid lighter. The goal was to create a shell that retained the ability to use fluids available in remote and austere conditions but adds sealing to keep the elements out and the fluid in.” said THYRM CEO Andrew Frazier. “We also wanted a clip to attach it to gear, and grip surfaces so it doesn’t turn into a bar of soap when it’s wet and dirty.”

The PyroVault fits most Zippo-style inserts including butane torch versions. It’s made of reinforced nylon for toughness and an O-ring provides a waterproof seal. The latch is spring-loaded for one-handed operation. The MOLLE/PALS compatible clip means that your lighter will be right where you need it when you need it.

The PyroVault is made in the USA and available for purchase at Thyrm.com and at authorized dealers.

New Bench Top Work Mat from PDW

Sunday, April 15th, 2018

Specialized Work Mat for Craftsmen, Makers, DIYers, and Tinkerers

The mat is made especially to keep your project organized and to prevent the loss of small items. Made from flexible food grade PVC, the mat features ten compartments that are perfect for working on knives, watches our any other DIY project you are tinkering with. (It definitely beats losing the spring bars of your watch into the carpet).

The PDW Benchtop Work Mat is a thicker styled, negative relief work surface and measures 11” x 17” x 3?8” thick.

The Design and R&D Team at PDW states:

“This workshop product we created was designed to address a need we routinely encountered. In particular when assembling and disassembling folding knives we wanted to have an isolated work surface to keep and organize small parts like machine screws, washers, back spacers, pocket clips to the larger parts like the handles and blade. Those neoprene mouse pad type work mats just didn’t do a good job keeping small parts organized or in many instances from rolling on to the floor. Our work mat has proven useful for many of our workshop to home tinkering tasks; from changing out spring bars on a watch, servicing a flashlight, and if you’re feeling really adventurous repairing your smartphone. You’re going to want at least 2. One for the kitchen table and one for the workshop/garage.”

The PDW Benchtop Work Mat will be available for purchase for $29.00 each, at 12 Noon PDT, Wed., 18APR18 via their website www.prometheusdesignwerx.com.

ThirdBlockGear – Mobile Security Kits

Wednesday, February 7th, 2018

If you’re on the road all of the time, and you want to protect your information from prying eyes, this is something you need to take a serious look at. It was created by a friend of mine, who also served in the Intel business.

ThirdBlockGear’s MOBSEC kits are designed for the traveler concerned with security in foreign counties or even when using public infrastructure at home. It is a collection of tools, apps, and suggested operating procedures that limit the exposure of your mobile phone to attacks. They offer three versions of the kit, one for tablets, the full kit for Android phones, and a lighter kit for iPhone.

Key Capabilities
Block all RF emanations when not in use (GSM, WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC, etc.)
Block attacks from malicious charging stations example in the news
Enable safe transfer of data to external systems without emanations
Secure standard operating system data leakage or compromises
Back-up charging without external sources
Offline, safe applications for use without networks.

Yes, some DIYers can do all of this themselves, but if they have the knowledge, they’ve already done it. This is for the person who is smart enough to know they need to protect themselves, but is also smart enough to know they dont know how to and is willing to seek out assistance.
