CSOR Wears Aku Pilgrims

Friday, July 14th, 2017

I like Aku Pilgrim boots and apparently so does the Canadian Special Operations Regiment (CSOR). In this DND photo of their recent Change of Command parade at Garrison Petawawa, we see new commander Lt-Col Andrew Vivian, outgoing commander Lt-Col Steven Hunter, and officiating officer Maj Gen Mike Rouleau, commander of Canadian Special Operations Forces Command (CANSOFCOM).

Rampart Range Day – Aku

Tuesday, May 26th, 2015

The Aku NS564 Bosco has been a great militarized trekking shoe for the last decade.  Unfortunately, supply here in North America has been difficult.  Today I met up with the North American distributor.  In addition to Rampart International in Canada, they are available in the U.S. Through Procurement Specialists.

Above, is the NS564 Spider.  It’s a slight modification to the classic model (which is still available), adding a rubber rand along the edge of the toe in order to counter wear.  The NS564 family has a tighter toe box than Aku’s Pilgrim models which were introduced a couple of years ago.  This is because of their use as an approach or urban climbing boot.

High Leg Pilgrim Boots from AKU

Sunday, June 29th, 2014

You asked for it, so they built it. Italian brand AKU has been making some great militarized trekking shoes for many years now and about a year-and-a-half ago they teamed up with Trekkit Mountain Sports, an outdoor specialty shop in Hereford, UK to introduce the Pilgrim. Now, they’re offering up High Leg versions of the very popular Pilgrim.

High Leg Pilgrim from AKU

Based on the successful NS564 Bosco (despite assertions to the contrary, the 564 was not designed for the SEALs but rather an Army unit), the Pilgrim is designed to carry pack loads over 55lbs and incorporate several technologies. This includes an Internal Midsole System which uses an anatomically shaped 3D midsole that mimics the natural foot shape to increase support and minimize slippage. Above the IMS midsole is a 3mm layer of high density EVA which protects the user from loading forces particularly when carrying heavy packs. It also provides a layer of protective support for foot rather than it resting on a hard material. Below the IMS midsole is a thicker layer of 5mm (under the forefoot) and 17mm (under the heel) high density EVA which absorbs impact forces from the ground. The Pilgrim continues to integrate the AIR8000 upper materials found on the Bosco. The two styles are designated by Pilgrim DS for dry, hot climates and Pilgrim GTX for wet, temperate climates. The real change here is the High Leg 9″ upper, making them more palatable for wear with uniforms and to provide increased protection above the ankle.

Friday, March 14th, 2014

Partlow, Virginia (March 13, 2014) – In response to increasing requests for on-line accessability, Procurement Specialists, LLC is proud to launch our E-commerce web site. We are currently featuring the AKU tactical and military footwear and have recently teamed up with Steve Reichert Training (SRT) to offer a 10% discount on all internet sales using code SRT10. Procurement Specialists, LLC is a full line quartermaster support organization and specializes in gear and supplies for the military, special forces, law enforcement, and first responders. We have been selling the AKU brand for a little over two years now and have a great track record of delivery and satisfaction.

AKU has been designing and manufacturing quality, long lasting boots for more than 50 years. Each of their tactical boots were developed after extensive research and input from the Operational communities. Their tactical boots are lightweight, durable and responsive in situations where gear is crucial for survival, not just performance.

The following AKU tactical boots are available through Procurement Specialists, LLC:

NS564BeigeBlack

NS564 BOSCO – The NS564 is the original boot designed about 13 years ago with input from both the USN and USA SOF communities. The construction of these boots guarantees their performance in extreme hot, humid and dry environments. This style was designed as an approach shoe and the Vibram SWOT outsole with a flat area at the toe makes them ideal for a variety of terrains. The rugged AIR 8000 synthetic upper makes them breathable, while the 360-degree abrasion-resistant rand minimizes wear and tear. The Sanifit lining provides superior moisture wicking that keeps the foot dry, and In combination with the lacing structure technology causes a better fit and reduces blisters. The NS564 as been field tested and is a good, all around low profile shoe good for pack loads of up to 50lbs. They come in both the classic Beige and an all Black versions.

NS564 Spider

NS564 SPIDER – The NS564 Spider was developed about eleven years after the original NS564. The only difference in the two boots is that the Spider has a slightly extended toe bumper for added grip in situations where that stability is a must. They feature all the same ‘out of the box’ wearability as the originals.

Aku Pilgrim DS

PILGRIM DS & GTX – AKU’s new Pilgrim tactical boots were developed by Trekitt Mountain Sports in the UK. Much like the original NS564 that was developed for US SOF, the Pilgrims were designed with direct input and requirements from the UK SOF community. These boots were developed to be able to carry pack loads over 55lbs and have a modified technology that still provides all-day comfort and improved impact absorption due to the Internal Midsole System. They also have the Vibram sole, but with a slightly deeper tread and modest heel. This design keeps the foot low to the ground for maximum stability. The design of the upper features additional flex points around the ankle which is essential when driving or kneeling, and the padded cuff makes the boot fit more securely around the ankle. Additionally, the Pilgrim models are a slightly taller boot giving added support to the ankle to allow for the heaver load adaptations. The Pilgrim DS is highly breathable and designed for dry, hot climates. The Pilgrim GTX features a Gore-Tex liner so it is ideally suited for wet, temperate climates. Both models come in Beige and all Black options.

Aku KS Leight

KS LEIGHT GTX – Like their counterparts, the KS Leight GTX was developed for the SOF community. With direct input from the Swiss, the Leights have been developed for the terrain and temperatures they were most likely to encounter. They are constructed with a full-grain leather shaft combined with a breathable fabric with Gore-Tex lining. They are an over the ankle boot and feature all the same great internal technologies AKU is know for in their mountaineering and military boot lines. Despite being designed for cold climates and being all leather, they are exceedingly light weight and extremely comfortable to wear.

AKU Teams Up With Rampart International To Distribute Military And Tactical Boots In Canada

Wednesday, March 12th, 2014

Montreal, Canada (March 10, 2014) – AKU, designer and manufacturer of high quality outdoor, tactical and military footwear has recently teamed up with Rampart International, Canada’s leading supplier of operational equipment to distribute AKU boots to military, special forces, law enforcement, and first responder operators in Canada.

“AKU’s tactical boot line represents the company’s legendary heritage of technology, quality and innovation. We will have the complete line of tactical boots in stock shortly; ready to ship across Canada with our famous $10 flat rate shipping.”

AKU has been designing and manufacturing military boots for the Italian and Swiss armies for more than 50 years. Developed in conjunction with U.S. Navy Seals and other international military organizations, AKU’s tactical boots are lightweight, durable and responsive in situations where gear is crucial for survival, not just performance.

The following AKU tactical boots will now be available through Canadian retailers:

NS 564 (BOSCO & SPIDER) – The NS 564 boots are AKU’s original special ops styles and were designed in conjunction with the U.S Navy Seals. The construction of these boots guarantees their performance in extreme hot, cold, humid and dry environments. The rugged AIR 8000 synthetic upper makes them breathable, while the 360-degree abrasion-resistant rand minimizes wear and tear (the Spider features additional toe protection). The Vibram SWOT outsole with a flat area at the toe makes them ideal for climbing and scrambling on a variety of terrain. The moisture-wicking Sanifit lining keeps the foot dry and reduces blisters.

PILGRIM DS & GTX – AKU’s new Pilgrim tactical boots provide all-day comfort and improved impact absorption due to the anatomically-shaped Internal Midsole System. The Vibram sole keeps the foot low to the ground for maximum stability and contact with the terrain and features a toe spring to allow for a smooth and comfortable gate. The design of the upper features additional flex points around the ankle which is essential when driving or kneeling, and the padded cuff makes the boot fit more securely around the ankle. The Pilgrim DS is highly breathable and designed for dry, hot climates. The Pilgrim GTX features a Gore-Tex liner so it is ideally suited for wet, temperate climates.

KS LEIGHT GTX – Another classic military boot from AKU, the KS Leight GTX is constructed with a full-grain leather shaft combined with a breathable fabric with Gore-Tex lining.

AKU Pilgrim

Tuesday, February 19th, 2013

Many of you are familiar with the AKU NS 564 Bosco Boot. Trekitt, an outdoor shop in Hereford, UK has worked with Italian boot producer AKU to take the next evolutionary step for this classic design. Seeing how Trekitt is located in Hereford, this new boot is named appropriately enough the Pilgrim.

The AKU Pilgrim is offered in two models; Pilgrim DS for dry hot climates and Pilgrim GTX for wet temperate climates.

20130219-091752.jpg

The biggest change is that the boot features the Internal Midsole System which uses an anatomically shaped 3D midsole that mimics the natural foot shape to increase support and minimize slippage.

The Pilgrim continues to integrate the AIR8000 materials used in the Bosco. But, with two variants for hot dry and temperate wet conditions you can enjoy the same look and fit for both environments.

AKU NS 564 Bosco Boots

Monday, December 3rd, 2012

AKU NS 564 Bosco tactical boots haven’t been available in the US for some time. Now, Morrison Industries is bringing this popular boot back that was developed in conjunction with US Special Operations for a wide variety of missions to include HALO, amphibious and mountain operations. It’s a rugged multi-purpose boot that does NOT use a waterproof breathable liner meaning great breathability. After becoming a favorite of select US SOF units it is now quickly becoming a favorite with the British Armed Forces.

The NS 564 is constructed with a rugged and breathable AIR 8000 synthetic upper. They feature a 360-degree abrasion-resistant rand to minimize wear and tear. They have a Vibram SWOT outsole that makes them great for scrambling as well due to the sole’s edging capabilities and a flat area at the toe for toe point climbing. The internal Sanifit lining wicks away moisture produced by your foot at a very fast rate. Although the NS 564 has a slim-line midsole Aku’s internal midsole keeps your feet comfortable mile after mile, and the tough Bycast Rand offers great protection from rocky paths.

Now that we’ve gotten all of the technical stuff out of the way, let’s talk turkey about these boots.

I’ve had a pair of the AKU NS 564 Bosco “urban approach shoes” for years (going back to before I retired). When they first came into the country they were billed as an “urban approach shoe” which could be used for light trekking. The “Bosco” has been marketed as a Navy SEAL boot in Europe but nothing could be further from the truth. A customer asked a US distributor of the Italian brand AKU to have them create a special model from the upper from one boot and the sole from another. Then they slapped a new, subdued paint job on the thing.

This is a low topped, lightweight boot at 2 lbs, 6 oz a pair. The NS564 Bosco offers true sizing so no need to order a size larger or smaller. As mentioned, there’s no waterproof breathable liner. So consider that when you choose these. If you are in a wet environment your feet are going to get wet unless you use a waterproof breathable sock. If you need to go that route, take that, as well as your other socks (such as heavy socks), into account in sizing. The up side is that they are going to breathe very well and dry more quickly than boots with extensive lining systems.

The color is quite interesting. It’s a three tone boot consisting of a Light Brown suede paired with a Green nylon upper and a Black rand and sole. What’s interesting about the Green is that I’ve noticed over the years how adaptable it is. It appears more Brown when in a Brown environment and more Green when in a Green environment. Plus, as you use it, you’re going to get it dirty. Note, they are also offered in an all Black model.

Also, note the generous rand that protects the boot and helps you get a hold if you end up doing a little climbing in these. Additionally, I’ve always loved the lack of metal hooks. Parachutists will appreciate this feature as well as anyone who doesn’t like catching a hook while in the back country. Also, they are literally made for 550 cord laces. With some footwear this sticks out, but not these.

Remember, under the hood, these are approach shoes. They are intended for hiking and climbing. The actual soles are grippy but a word of caution. They are thin. Not uncomfortably so, but if your day consists of standing around then that insole replacement is crucial.

They are a great boot and I’m not the only one who thinks so. Canipe mentioned them over the weekend. He’s had them as long as I have and I’d say spends a lot more time in them than I do as I end up trying out different brands and I regularly see him wearing his. Canipe swears by the AKU. My big feedback is to swap out the insoles but I’ll tell you to do that with most any shoe. No matter the footwear, consider this in sizing.
