I caught up with Monkey as he filmed Senior Team Leader Joseph Garcia of US Corrections Special Operations Group and his K9, Max. STL Garcia discussed use of the Core Survival HEL-STAR strobe to mark team members as well as the Team Wendy Bump Helmet.

Look for Monkey’s video soon.

Depending on the model, the Attach Patch It can be sewn to a helmet cover, tied in place with the cordage provided or glued directly to the helmet shell via Very-High-Bond permanent adhesive. Regardless, it incorporates bungees to held the strobe fast during use yet facilitate easy removal.

Light, Slider Mounted was originally designed for the JPADS system. When the slider deploys, the light turns on to help mark bundles.

Some customers saw this and asked Core Survival to modify it for use with personnel cutes. A new version is in testing that incorporates an IR light as well as a remote control switch to turn it off.

Additionally, they continue to refine the Hel-Star 5 light. The flexible lighting strip is smaller than ever and the LEDs can be programmed to emit different colors or patterns.

Core Survival HEL-STAR 6

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

Previously we wrote about the Core Survival HEL-STAR 5 which you can see in the photo above. It was designed specifically to work with the Gentex PM HALO helmet. It’s been used by a wide variety of military units. One of those DoD customers asked Core Survival to develop a new model that would increase lateral visibility. The result is the HEL-STAR 6.

For Core Survival HEL-STAR 6 is a natural progression of the HEL-STAR family, starting with HEL-STAR 4 and later evolving to the HEL-STAR 5. All three product lines were designed and built around user input, addressing user requirements.

It offers any combination of white, green, blue, red, and IR lights (either flashing or steady). Additionally, they offer variable flash rates and coded signals for IFF.

It can be turned on, while mounted and while wearing gloves. According to Core Survival the light also features, “Positive visual and tactile confirmation of ON/OFF and operating status with no guesswork.” Additionally, it is powered by a CR123 battery and Made in USA!

There are four models with different functions based on various user profiles.
HEL-STAR 6 Models
610 – Two Function
620 – Four Functions (Two Secure Firewalled, Two Overt Firewalled)
630 – Three Functions with secure lock out mode
640 – Four Functions (All for available with switches)

The button at the top of the light is either a nose plug or switch, depending on the model. It is used to change operating modes (e.g., overt/covert). The units are preprogrammed at the plant.

HEL-STAR in Action

Monday, November 28th, 2011

Remember the HEL-STAR 5 strobe from Core Survival we wrote about back in June? Here is some video of it in action, attached to a Gentex Parachutist Helmet during a military free fall jump at Eloy, AZ. It is designed for use by parachutists while in freefall and under canopy to identify one another.

HEL-STAR 5 from Core Survival

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

The requirement for the HEL-STAR came from tragedy. In 1998, a USAF PJ was killed in a parachute accident over the ocean off of Japan. His parachute was caught in a strobe light zip tied to his pro-tec helmet. This accident caused the joint parachuting community to begin the search for a more conformal light specifically for freefall parachuting. Over the ensuing years, several solutions were used until they started working with Core Survival and adopted the original HEL-STAR 4.

The HEL-STAR 5 is a flexible lighting solution designed to be velcroed to a parachutist helmet offering a smooth, low profile mount. One of the big enhancements over the HEL-STAR 4 is at the junction between the control module and the light strip. It was strengthened in order to alleviate concerns over cable wear due to repeated flexion. Additionally, the controls were altered slightly to enhance tactile verification of operating mode.

Three distinct operating modes are provided with a choice of White, Green or IR signals, either flashing or steady. The light is bright enough for jumpers to identify one another in freefall or under canopy. The O-ring sealed design is waterproof to at least 16 feet and the unit is powered by a single CR123 battery.

Below is a short video of the HEL-STAR 5 blinking in strobe mode between white and green lights (mode 1).

The HEL-STAR 5 boasts three operating modes:

HS-501 M-1: White/Green (Alt. Flash)
M-2: Green (Steady)
M-3: IR (Flash)

Naturally, once the troops got a hold of the marker they came up with additional applications for it including vehicles, outer wear, and equipment. Based on user feedback, additional capability is being developed for this family of lights. Core Survival products are Made in USA.
