Garmin – Tactix Tactical Ops GPS Watch

Tuesday, December 10th, 2013

pd-01-lg

The Garmin tactix Tactical Ops GPS watch is a rugged time piece that packs a lot of features into its frame. The case is made from stainless steel, PVD-coated in a non-reflective Black, and is waterproof up to 50 meters. The face consists of a non-reflective, scratch-resistant, curved mineral glass. The negative mode liquid crystal display is designed for stealth operation, and the Green LED backlight is NVD compatible. The wrist straps are made of polyurethane, and are also Black.

The tactix’s high-sensitivity GPS automatically calibrates the on-board altimeter, barometer and 3-axis compass, in addition to the time and date in multiple time zones. The GPS feature allows the user to create routes, record up to 1000 waypoints, 10,000 track points, and the TrackBack features guides the user back along a previously recorded tracklog. The tactix has ANT+ and Bluetooth capabilities to share tracks, waypoints, and routes with other compatible Garmin devices or smartphones. The tactix features a preloaded world wide basemap.

The tactix functions as a recording tool for training. It can provide real-time performance data, including distance, pace, cadence, and calories burnt. It’s compatible with Garmin’s heart rate monitor, speed/cadence bike sensor, and foot pod. Additionally, the tactix features U.S. tidal data and the Garmin jumpmaster software for amphibious and airborne operations.

The tactix is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. It can last up to 50 hours on a single charge in GPS mode, three weeks in sensor mode, and five weeks in watch mode.

I’ve been wearing the tactix around for a few days, and I like it. Setup was quick and simple, and once I got used to the buttons and menu navigation it became easy to switch between the different functions. At first, it didn’t seem that I was getting the listed battery life out of the watch, so I left it on an extended charge and now it’s still going strong a couple of days later, with barely a dent in the battery meter. It’s also worth mentioning that despite the styling, this isn’t a “big watch”. It’s lightweight and isn’t uncomfortable to wear at all.

The Garmin tactix is currently available from www.strohmanenterprise.com. Run by a USMC Veteran, Strohman takes good care of military and LE personnel.

Garmin fenix

Due very soon is the new Garmin fenix. It’s a first for Garmin. Imagine packing a Foretrex 401 into the size of a wristwatch. That’s a fenix. Granted, it doesn’t have ALL of the features of the Foretrex but it is a smaller form factor and it boasts a 50 hour battery life.

The fenix incorporates watch, altimeter, barometer, compass, temperature plot, high-sensitivity GPS receiver, and up to 50 hour battery life.

MATBOK Backhand GPS Carrier

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

MATBOK developed the Backhand GPS Carrier after they found that carrying your GPS on your weapon or your chest gets to be a pain. For example, sometimes you don’t have your weapon in front of you or you’re using an entirely different weapon system. A chest mounted GPS can also get in your way when you’re trying to climb or reaching for for your comms PTT. Their reasoning is that you will always have your hands with you no matter what job, or weapon system you’re using. It’s a simple, lightweight design that gives the user the ability to have their GPS with them at all times. Designed to accommodate the GARMIN Foretrex, it carries it on the back of either hand in the same manner as an altimeter. The Backhand GPS Carrier will also accept a wrist compass on the wrist strap.

Available in Coyote, Desert Digital, and MultiCam from matbock.com.

NTOA – Garmin

Sunday, September 18th, 2011

Garmin’s GTU 110 is a tracking unit. Think of it as a tag. Boasting up to four weeks of battery life and up to seven days of location information, the unit can be immediately queried by phone or computer.

At this point the only limitation of the GTU 10 is that coverage is only available within the US and Canada. This still makes it great for tracking assets or investigative work. In fact, since you can check the data via the Internet, it’s a great way to keep track of a sketchy spouse while deployed.

As always, our favorite place to purchase Garmin is Strohman Enterprise.

Garmin K9 Tracker

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

The Astro 320 from Garmin International was designed as a GPS-enabled tracking system for sporting dogs. However, military and LE K9 personnel might find the gears in their heads start to move once they take a look at it. Others may come up with some other interesting uses as well.

Compatible with Garmin’s DC 20, DC 30, and DC™ 40 dog tracking collars the new Astro 320 GPS receiver can up to ten dogs at once across up to nine miles in flat, unobstructed terrain with the optional extended range antenna. The waterproof handheld has a 3-axis electronic compass allowing you to accurately view the dog’s position when holding the Astro 320 at any angle, an internal vibration motor that supports silent alerts in addition to audible tones, and a keypad lock.

It features a vibrant 2.6” 65k color sunlight-readable display and built-in shaded relief world wide basemap that depicts basic geographical features. Additional mapping detail can be added by using the internal memory or a microSD card slot for optional products such as the subscription-based BirdsEye™ Satellite Imagery or topographic maps.

Here are a few screenshots to give you an idea of some of the Astro 320’s functionality.

The best place I have found to purchase Garmin products is from Strohman Enterprise. Owned by Lt Col Joseph Strohman USMC (Ret), the company supplies Garmin and Aimpoint products to LE & Military organizations as well as individual personnel. Joe and his crew are well versed in all of the products and can answer any questions.
