Gunfighter Moment – Larry Vickers

Saturday, June 25th, 2016

This GFM is a little different coming from me as I generally keep mine firearms related; this one is about awareness or tuning into the world we live in. This world is far different from the one I grew up in as a child – in some ways better; other worse. I turn 53 this month and I can tell you adapting to change and staying aware is a real challenge and as you get older is less and less fun. The old adage about teaching a dog new tricks applies here. Understand the Internet and social media has us all connected more than ever but also allows us to isolate ourselves more than ever – all at the same time. Bizarre but true.

Case in point a friend of mine recently got stung by PayPal for firearms related transactions and had his account frozen. He wasn’t selling guns but that didn’t matter – they still locked him down for a period of time. Those that know PayPal know they are extremely anti-gun. My buddy is embarrassed as he was clueless and admits he should have known better but I see it’s a byproduct of the strange Internet awareness, or lack thereof, world we live in. Do your best to stay switched on and tuned in – it’s for your own good. In more ways than one.

Vickers Checks Out The AN-94

Monday, May 16th, 2016

Larry Vickers takes us through the 5.45x39mm AN-94.

This video includes the only known documented test of the 2 round burst dispersion of the AN-94. In two-shot burst mode, the AN-94’s Nikonov mechanism is designed to fire the second shot quickly enough to allow it to escape before the recoil of the first shot is felt.

I’m gonna make this one short and sweet; when researching combat marksmanship trainers do your research – the industry is jam packed with scam artists. I see training scars and bad habits every class that originated from some ‘wannabe but never was’ instructors who are teaching stuff that is not only stupid but dangerous.

Do your research and if in doubt default to that resume. Nuff said – be safe and keep shooting.

Anyone taking home defense seriously needs to take a serious look at the firearm they plan on using, where they store it, the Ammo they have available for it, and realistic transport and reload scenarios. Take a very hard look at these as well as any other issues that are specific to your situation. This can help you decide what type makes the most sense for you. A perfect example is a home defense shotgun; depending on the weapon reloading it under stress may not be a good option. Think it thru and figure out what works best for you.

Given the current situation in the industry with red dot sights I get people asking me everyday on what Aimpoint optic I recommend.

Being a long time user of Aimpoints red dot sights and a brand ambassador for the company I have had a chance to use everything they make. If money is no object then I recommend the Micro T-1/T-2/H-1/H-2 series. They are the top of the line in my book.

If you are watching the budget then I recommend the Patrol Rifle Optic. For the money spent it is superb.

Hopefully this helps you pick what Aimpoint optic works best for you. In my considerable experience, and I am admittedly biased, Aimpoint red dot sights are without peer; very simply the finest money can buy.

Gunfighter Moment – Larry Vickers

Always take the time to try different weapons- pistols, carbines, etc. This makes you a more well rounded shooter and allow as you to make informed decisions and provide sound advice to others that might seek input. This is part of your ‘gun education’ and is a critical and often overlooked part of becoming more savvy with firearms.

This was brought home to me once again at the class I just taught with Rob Leatham. Rob is an incredible shooter of course and widely considered the greatest handgun shooter of all time (I agree completely) but one thing Rob does very well is the ability to pick up any handgun you can think of and shoot it – and in most cases shoot it very well.

This comes from not only having a solid foundation of handgun fundamentals but a genuine interest in learning about different types of pistols. He is in his heart a gun guy just like me.

One of the things I did in this class was offer to demonstrate a drill known as ‘The Test’ (also known as the 10-10-10 drill) using a student’s pistol. ‘The Test’ is a simple drill and a very good one; 10 shots from the ready in 10 seconds at a B-8 bullseye replacement center from 10 yards. Each shot in the white outside the black is one second added to your score and each shot off the white paper is 3 seconds. So in order to pass with one shot out of the black and in the white your raw time must be under 9 seconds, with 2 shots out under 8 seconds and so on. It’s an excellent drill and one I do in some form or fashion in every two-day pistol class I teach.

I passed ‘The Test’ easily regardless of the students pistol I used (in this case a Glock 35, Glock 41 and a DA/SA SIG P226) – how did I do this? Simple – I shoot as many different handguns as possible to form a mental ‘data bank’ on how one pistol might perform vs. the other. The only way to accomplish this is to try different weapons whenever you can. Hell you might even find something that you like better than what you currently shoot (M&P shooters I’m looking at you; try an HK VP9; a far better pistol)

Hope this helps and as always be safe and keep shooting!

Gunfighter Moment – Larry Vickers

I’m amazed at the continued popularity of the 1911. The pistol is over 100 years old and in the civilian sector it is more popular than ever. In LE and Military use its glory days are past but in civilian hands its popularity is off the chart. Proof of this can be seen in the number of custom production shops like Wilson Combat and others that build and sell thousands of high end 1911’s every year. Unbelievable.

My advice when it comes to the 1911 is simple; get educated on the platform as it is not the same as running a pistol like a Glock, keep it lubed as they do not like to run dry, and you get what you pay for. A $700 1911 is not going to perform like a $3700 one – period.

Fans of the 1911 here’s a heads up; I have a special project that I am going to be releasing for this holiday season that any true gun guy will enjoy – and at a price that won’t break the bank. Watch for it on my social media outlets as well as here on Soldier Systems Daily. Be safe and keep shooting.
