Oddly enough, guys get promoted. When he said it he was a Maj Gen. The guy retired yesterday. Wind your neck in about bullshit and just enjoy the sentiment.
“You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn’t wear a veil. You know, guys like that ain’t got no manhood left anyway. So it’s a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them. Actually, it’s a lot of fun to fight. You know, it’s a hell of a hoot. It’s fun to shoot some people. I’ll be right upfront with you, I like brawling.” Love this quote. Happy trails CHAOS
Thats an old quote I have heard for years. Thats been used in law enforcement for a long time given 90% or more of contacts are nonviolent and will complain in heart beat if your less than officer friendly but you have to go from officer friendly ti street fighter or gun fighter with little to no warning. With our military stuck in COIN operations and being forced to act like policenen, it applies to them even more.
I’m ambivalent about Mattis. I do like his reputed aggressiveness but the press tends to make some Generals superhuman and forgets their faults. The same was the case with Shwartzkopf. I wish Mattis well but he had his share of blemishes.
His relief of COL Dowdy because he didn’t beat the Army to Baghdad or his refusal to send aid to an ODA that had been hit by a 2000lb bomb are some less than stellar moments.
One of the best generals ever and by far the best I was under the command of. He was an old-school warrior, nit the more common political monster.
He’s quoted as a Major General, but the picture has him as a Lieutenant General.

I wish the man well but even our heroes are just men.
Didn’t Musashi say this in the Book of Five Rings?
