Zonk! is an exercise rarely performed, but remains one of the most beloved US Army Physical Fitness commands. Almost mythical in nature, some Soldiers spend 20 or more years in the Army and never hear the sweet words, “Zonk Position!…Zonk!” Ranger Up! has developed a design concept to memorialize Zonk! for all. Let’s hope they make it.

Whenever I heard that word there were usually strings attached…

Stan the Man zonked my battalion when I was a Corporal. That was the 1st and last time I experienced thine heavenly word of woe.
When I was a brand new and dumb 2LT who didn’t know zonk, my Soldiers tricked me into saying “Zonk” in front of the entire Company PT formation prior to “Fall In” by the 1SG.
My Company Commander and 1SG walked out the back door of the Company orderly room as the ENTIRE Company ran for the hills,(including my fellow Platoon Leaders and the Company XO).
Lucky for me, I got to go on an extra long run with the CO & 1SG that morning. And was greeted with a sh*t eating grin from the BN and BDE CSMs during motor stables later that day, who had already heard the story.

I had heard tales of the mythical “Zonk” all through my career, but it wasn’t until I was an E7 with about 18 years in before I experienced one. Good times.
