As many of you know, I am Scouter and was active in Boy Scouting growing up, having earned the rank of Eagle in 1981. Only 2 Million young men earned the rank of Eagle Scout during its first 100 years of existence from 1912-2012. It gives me great pride to honor one of our readers today who earned his rank earlier this month and I can think of few better days to do it.
It takes years of dedication to complete the Trail to Eagle. To attain the rank of Eagle Scout, Joel had to:
-Earn 5 other ranks before attaining Eagle Scout
-Earn at least 21 Merit Badges (12 Eagle badges and 9 other badges)
-Master a wide variety of Scoutcraft skills including Camping, Fire-Building, First-Aid, Knot Tying and Lashing, Use of Map and Compass, Cooking over an open fire, and how to raise, lower and care for the American Flag
-Teach other Scouts these same skills
-Maintain Physical Fitness
-Hold numerous leadership positions
-Plan and supervise other Scouts in a service project to benefit his community
-And last, but most certainly not least, live by the Scout Oath and Law
These are all skills that will serve you well throughout your life.
On behalf of all SSD readers, I would like to congratulate Joel P, III and his proud family for this accomplishment. May you soar high.

Congratulations young man, earning the rank of Eagle is a challenge, but it is well worth it. I certainly hope you take the opportunity to turn around and give back to the program and help raise other men to meet the high standards. You’ll keep maturing, but being an Eagle Scout shows you had your act together at a young age.
Congratulations Joel! I am an Eagle Scout myself and I know how much hard work and dedication it takes to get there. Welcome to the brotherhood.
Well done Joel. A great achievement within an outstanding organization.
Outstanding, Joel. I earned mine in 2000.
Congratulations Joel on your achievement. You have made the world a better place for completing this honorable task and choosing to live your life by a code.
Proud father of two Eagle Scouts.
Congratulations Joel. (forgot to type that part in)
Congrats i earned mine in 1999.
From one eagle scout to another, congrats.
Congratulations Joel on earning your Eagle. I wish you continued success and challenge you to continue to live up to the high ideals of what it means to be an Eagle Scout as you progress through life. I earned mine in 1997.
Congratulations Joel. It’s a small club you’ve just joined. Welcome.
Eagle Class of 1989.
Thanks very much for this SSD Court of Honor. This really means a lot to him and to me his dad. If any SSD readers are in the Savannah, GA AO on January 26th and would like to attend we would welcome your presence. Thanks again……
Thank you to SSD and everyone in the comments for the congratulations.
Congratulations. It’s a achievement that soo few can claim. Take a honor in that but also use it to pass it on to others.
Congrats, Joel. Earned mine in 1992. Hopefully you managed your project time a little better than I and my troop-mates, and didn’t wait until a week or two before your 18th birthday to start your project.
Well done, Joel! Still tight with my Scout brothers and my Philmont crew brothers from decades ago.
Class of 1981. And my guys pulled off my project for me– amazing bunch. Project wasn’t that good– but the Scouts were awesome. A few months later, they were there for my family when my Mom passed away. You can’t put any kind of price on good guys like that.
Welcome to the club Joel! I earned mine in 2012 and I can already see how the outdoor and leadership experiences (SPL and Philmont) I had prepared me for service in the Army.
You run in the right circles for long enough and you will cross paths with an Eagle, there were 3 of us in a class of 12 when I was at the Black Rapids Training Site. The story of the 100 scouts speech is absolutely true from my observations in the years since I earned mine.
From this day on you are a marked man.
Congratulations on the Eagle rank. Meeting that goal is still to this day one of my greatest achievements. It never ceases to amaze me how often it gives me an advantage over regular folk.
Have you seen the arrow?
Congratulations! This is an achievement you will be proud of for the rest of your life. Remember, you didn’t “make” Eagle Scout rank, you ARE an Eagle Scout, for life!
Congrats man! I earned mine just this summer and, as you know, it was well worth the journey. Great work and welcome!
Congrats! Eagle Scout, troop 32
Congratulations Joel! As they say n the Navy: BRAVO ZULU!
Now think about going to college at a service academy. The service academies LOVE Eagle Scouts!
Congrats on a great accomplishment. It will open many doors for you throughout your adult life.

“….and to give back more to Scouting than it has given to me…”
-Haunting excerpt from my and every Eagle Court of Honor. We have a big debt to pay, friends! I personally can’t wait for my 5 year old son to be signed up!
I try to live up to that charge. Good for my friend, and good luck to your son,
Well done brother. Welcome to the family.
