Hail Columbia!

Before there was Uncle Sam, America was personified by a lady named Columbia. Wearing a Phrygian cap and adorned with the red, white and blue, she fell out of favor after World War I.

Columbia has always had a special place in my heart and this war bond poster remains my favorite. The recent rantgasm over the use of flag-like garments caused me to look at some illustrations of our American lady. I had forgotten how closely associated she was with the Stars and Stripes.

I see the point of the previous post, with “Dude” sporting his chonis’ and plate carrier. Could easily go both ways, without a doubt. The internet makes is easy to paint it various ways without a clear history or the situation at hand.
Just make sure if one chooses to enforce “it”, be Judge and not just accuser- Stand up for the flag when the hottie on the calander is posing in a RWB bikini or your old timer neighbor drops ole’ Glory on the stairs trying to hang her high. Lots of situational commentary with keyboard critics.
If you are such a person, kudos to you-you are a rare bird indeed. But most won’t say a word unless it’s the popular narrative of the moment.
Coming from a former hater and recovering asshole myself, it’s nice to see the flag as often as possible and in good taste.

    “Rantgasm”…that’s a keeper.

Don’t forget Uncle Sam’s decidedly American flag based clothing.

I don’t have one of his pics readily available but I believe the crotch of his pants was almost always red and white stripes.

I don’t recall anyone getting their panties in a wad that his image was somehow disrespecting the actual flag with his colorful attire.

And for the record, I think a flag inspired bikini on a shapely lady is as patriotic as hell.

As a point of trivia… The Civil War song “Hail Columbia” are the honors played for the Vice President.

Uh-oh. Better not tell the local BSA council that Boy Scout is carrying a very, very big sheath knife. The local councils only want the Scouts to carry folders.

Oh, and make sure she has her hand firmly on the handle and says “I got it” before releasing it.

your joking right i thought the boyscouts were there to oh i dont know help boys learn how to survive in the wilderness and teach them valuable skills …..

      • Agentofwrath says:

Our council has that ridiculous policy as well, no fixed blades. What a load of shit. I allow my scouts to tote a fixed blade within reason. No Jackhawk 3000’s.

She’s not wearing the flag for underwear and looking like a homo either…

The plate carrier was cool, wearing the Stars and Stripes for underwear, not so much. There is a big distinction between a cartoon wearing the flag as a dress and Hi-Speed wearing the colors as drawers.

I guess Norman Rockwell painted cartoons.. Not saying NR painted this.. this is a portrait.. some one posed for this.. mickey mouse is a cartoon.. I know you ment illustration..

Actually, I prefer to pick and choose my internet battles. I like to think I am not some troll commenting on every single article. Of the seven plus years or more I have visited SSD every single day, multiple times a day, I have only commented on five or six articles. I think my track record shows that I defend worthy causes and not just nonsense shit to hear myself talk.

As for Columbia, I think this is fine, because she represents the country and the flag. Mr. OAF badass in the plate carrier article unfortunately does not personify the flag or represent the pride and will of an entire nation. Same goes for Uncle Sam. These characters were designed to unite a nation during a time of war, and put a face to an intangible object; pride and patriotism. I think we can all agree that Columbia wears the flag in a honorable and profound way, unlike the soldier holding the flag like a dead animal, wearing flag inspired ranger panties. This is also one of my favorite posters, and I wish I could find it in poster size print.

If you have a decent smartphone camera, snapshot it as a screen capture and then crop it accordingly. You can even optimize it with the iPhone filters for the older distressed look of the day.
I did this immediately after I saw the posting. The resolution is printable to a somewhat reasonable size-say portrait.
