“You Can’t Patent Colors” (Especially When You Can’t See Them)

Last year, PEO Soldier’s ‘Camo Czar’ COL Robert Mortlock famously commented to the Army Times that you cannot patent colors, when referring to the combat proven coloration of Crye Precision’s MultiCam pattern. Not long after, the Army went on to appropriate Crye’s color palette for their new Operational Camouflage Pattern. According to sources close to the program, it wouldn’t matter to COL Mortlock even if you could patent colors, because as it turns out, he is colorblind.

This artist’s depiction (right) of MultiCam gives you an idea of how the colorblind might interpret the pattern.

Rumor has it, COL Mortlock will be receiving his annual eye exam this afternoon. Hopefully nothing else will turn up.

So….am I sensing some trouble in paradise with the new OCP?

I’m honestly starting to become concerned that the transition may not go through. There was a lot of hype when they first announced it and then for months now…nothing.

I’m with you on that man. Getting very nervous this isn’t going to go down.

I see Rangers everyday wearing OCP so it seems to be happening. Maybe a bit slower than planed but still happening.

        • Ray says:

Yeah I’ve seen the Rangers wearing them. It just seems like they haven’t released any information about the uniforms in a while. They seem to be keeping it very close hold or something. I am just hoping that in June we start to see them show up at clothing sales.

Yes Regiment is authorized OCP as a stateside duty uniform.

Interesting to note that 2nd Batt’s uniforms were funded by its Officers. All of them. As in, the Officers funded the purchase of the uniforms the Battalion’s enlisted personnel wore at the anniversary ceremony that also marked the formal changeover to OCP:

THAT sounds like an April Fool’s article.

I don’t expect my unit’s Officers to fund my uniforms, I’m perfectly happy to buy my own, and cease getting grief for my OCP gear.

    Bravo Eric.

Please tell me this is an April Fools joke. If not then please tell me who is getting fired/demoted for the violating HIPPA and the Colonel’s right to privacy?

Good man on understanding what counts as sensitive information and privacy legislation. CIPP/US?

This will never top the “US Army to Abandon Camo Updated; Vows to Reinstate OD” April Fools post from 2013.

I cried so hard back then.

Wouldn’t be a terrible plan if they developed a camouflaged overlay for the disparate environments we deployed to. It’d be better if we wore khaki or coyote fatigues instead of OD tho…. Wider range of color environments and all… Cheaper uniforms for the Soldier, no camo except what’s issued for the overlay to buy. It’d kinda look like the Marine uniforms but reversed…

Is Ralph Lauren receiving royalties for Coyote Brown?
