Rulings and interpretations are not “laws”. /SARC/
Regulations and, as BillC said, rulings and interpretations. Which have the effect of laws but courts treat them with more scrutiny. That’s why you often see the ATF drop charges for violating regulations to avoid a court ruling.
Hhahahahahahfahahahah….. I needed a good laugh. Piss on me and tell me it’s raining, kind of laugh. Pretty much the only thing that is true is the Tax Stamp revenue and half of the background check.
So that means we can all go back to shouldering AR pistols, right?
According to this graphic, the ATF basically does nothing and only exists to form a redundant (and really, ineffective) role in law enforcement and waste taxpayer money. The ATF as a seperate law enforcement entity should be eliminated, and their capabilities and purpose folded back into the FBI.
They’re a law enforcement agency focused on three major areas of concern: Alcohol (which is legal), Tobacco (which is legal), and Firearms (which are legal).
And explosives
Alcohol, which is taxed and regulated. Tobacco, which is taxed and regulated, Firearms, which are not taxed, but are regulated, and you left out explosives, which are and need to be regulated. You can’t tax and regulate something without an enforcement entity.
The FBI, whether they believe it or not, has a very limited statutory jurisdiction. They NEVER should have tried to horn into explosives investigations, decades of experience lay with the ATF.

They are taxed with the 11% excise tax on complete guns.
Yet the gun registry the ATF created for the southwest border states is a real thing. So not only did they violate law theybsay so in their own bullshit.
That and the growing NFA list. NCIS checks aren’t “recorded” either. They are just stored for “administration” purposes for many, many years.
If they weren’t, there really wouldn’t need to a transaction number for them on the 4473, would there?

BATFE is a joke. If you don’t believe they are tracking people unlawfully, go to a gun show. Any gun show. There is always some dude with a polo shirt and a bulge on his hip trying to get wayy too buddy-buddy with people picking up black rifles. I mean, when they’re not too busy allowing illegal arms sales across our southern border without any sort of consequence or reprisal. Kinda like the Waco,Tx fiasco. Just a big “whoopsie! We’ll try and do better”.
I’ve personally seen an ATF “agent” (someone who was actually one of their FFL field investigators who was unlawfully carrying a firearm btw) DEMAND a gun shop owner’s bound book because of the number of gun sales out of his establishment.
How about Dimitri Kerras, formerly of Ares Arms? That guy fought a Constitutional battle against ATF, was RIGHT, and STILL had his place of business raided, his computers and data storage media “rifled” through (pardon the pun), and then the ATF says “whoopsie, we lost it!”. Then when ordered by a court to return it, it magically happens that the cloned drives “disappeared”. It’s okay though, those lawless asshats swore under oath that they didn’t keep anything. Honest! Just like the time where the ATF said they didn’t attempt to entrap this guy in Ruby Ri….oh…right. nevermind…”whoopsie!”

Everybody’s favorite agency to criticize. Over 3 decades every case I ever worked that involved the BATFE involved OMGs, gang warrant sweeps or explosives of unknown origin. Not once was there any discussion of firearms, other than those of the bad guys we were going out to bust.
