La Fête Nationale

Referred to as Bastille Day here in the US, the 14th of July is La Fête Nationale or National Celebration in France. It commemorates the Fête de la Fédération of 1790, which signified the unity of the French people one year after the Storming of the Bastille during the revolution. The French Revolution ironically succeeded in overthrowing King Louis XVI, who supported the American Revolution against King George III of England.

The day is marked with a military parade along the Champs-Élysées in Paris. Below is a short video, showcasing last year’s parade.

Watched it from the curb of the Champs-Élysées this morning. It was an impressive sight to behold!
