Water Jump

A reader and friend shared this POV video of one of his recent jumps. I have to say that it’s one of the things I miss most about the military, water jumps especially.

Which of course leads me to share something from yet another friend, Mayflower Research & Consulting

Being a combat diver I’ve done quite a few water jumps!

Do they wear some sort of flotation device? I would be interested in volunteering for something like this but I’m not the most confident swimmer.

    • SSD says:

You always wear flotation devices of one sort or another but you’d be surprised at how buoyant you are wearing a uniform in the ocean.

  4. guerrilla says:

Yep we wear UDT vests, but SSD is right. You barely get below the surface, especially when the wind is howling like that!

I have to admit that is one of the things I miss the most, water jumps were the best and an easy way to to qual for my yearly para pay!

I noticed the drills down here in Australia were a little different. We kept the reserve on for flotation and broke one riser on hitting the water to avoid the dragging this fella went through…

    • Guerrilla says:

That would work! But you’re right, we do it a little differently here. We are taught to completely come clear of the rig when we hit the water. I just went for a ride so the recovery team didn’t have to chase the chute across the ocean. Deflating the chute by pulling one toggle is a courtesy for the riggers, as it keeps it all from getting tangled into a big wet ball of knots.

Recon Marines out of Mobile, AL?

    No.
