MG Peter Fuller Relieved

After leaving PEO Soldier earlier this year, Major General Peter Fuller was assigned to as Deputy Commander for Programs
NATO Training Mission – Afghanistan
.

Yesterday, he was relieved of duty by GEN John Allen, commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan, for making what were characterized as “inappropriate public comments” on Thursday to the website Politico. Specifically, MG Fuller referred to the Afghan government as “isolated from reality,” and was critical of Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai.

In a statement of contrition, GEN Allen commented, “These unfortunate comments are neither indicative of our current solid relationship with the government of Afghanistan, its leadership, or our joint commitment to prevail here in Afghanistan…The Afghan people are an honorable people, and comments such as these will not keep us from accomplishing our most critical and shared mission — bringing about a stable, peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan.”

I have to say, I like MG Fuller. Unfortunately, the system eats its own and he will probably be forced into retirement. However, if this happens, I fully expect to see him in industry before long.

I worked with MG Fuller and he is a good man, the problem is there is a time and place to speak your mind and that was not it. What he said was dead on he will have the gratitude of the troops because of it, too bad about his job though

Commandment XI: Thou shalt not speak the truth in public when it deviates from the message your boss wants to send.

    Amen

    Pussification of America, folks.

    I agree with Ken

As a five tour veteran (so far), I say God bless him for saying what we all know to be true. I wish him and his family the best of luck with the future.

completely true what he said, i see how he was hung out for the truth imagain if Patton was still around and he gave one of his speeches.

The only people more detached from reality than the Afghan government are those who have stars in their rank.

This is so wrong. The general is just stating what most of us have been thinking or saying in private for the past three years. When I was in country the things that would come out of Karzi’s mouth would make me want to pull my hair out on a weekly basis. It is about time some spoke the truth maybe one of these years someone in Washington will face reality. But I doubt it. I hope general fuller lands someplace that appriciates honesty, but he seems like a good soldier and I am sure he will do well.

Didn’t we learn anything from Nam? When you prop up a cheap, tin horn dictator no good will come of it. Karzai is a crook who does not have the support of his people and his government will not survive whether we pull out today or 10 years from now. General Fuller only said what everyone was thinking.

I agree that Gen. Fuller simply said what needed to be said, but you can’t say those things in uniform and expect to get away with it. Every soldier knows that you can’t make moves without playing politics. I’m guessing the General knew what was going to happen when he made his comments. I hope everything ends up ok for him (i suspect it will).

Look what happened to LTC Alan West. He put his men’s lives first and was forced to retire. Now he is a FL Congressman and hopefully will have a chance to make a difference. General Fuller’s final chapter is yet to be written but his current actions can only be a morale boost for the troops.

If the American public only knew how corrupt the Afganistan leadership really is, houses on the Potomoc, large bank accounts and if it goes bad over there they will cut and run leaving the Afghan people to fight amougst the tribes. MG Fuller stated what is a fact, the American public is footing the bill for the Afghan Army, Police and other corrupt agencies. It’s a shame we sacrifice good leaders to hide the truth!
