Teddy was an amazing man, but he was also a HUGE racist…. so perhaps this t shirt is missing a great line like…. “classic bigot” or “blacks were not for Teddy” or “Teddy preferred whites” ??
just some thoughts.
I am kind of surprised at that comment. Granted, he is said to have held prevailing ‘white man’s burden’ views of his time but President Roosevelt regularly dined with blacks, which was quite scandalous for his time. He was more progressive than most and would probably be considered a ‘RINO’ by the standards of today’s Republican party.
If we look at the man in the context of his time, I’d judge him as a progressive. And, if he were alive today, he would most likely hold differing views. If we hold all of our forefathers by today’s standards then we can’t begin to admire any of them. As you know, many of the framers held slaves.
Perhaps by this standard we can’t hold any President up for admiration until Truman integrated the US military. Or perhaps it’s Johnson’s support of the civil rights movement that finally meets the standard. Or, President Obama? Seeing how he is the first President of African descent?
I could not agree with everything Teddy did as a President, but he was a man who stood on what he believed, not what some poll said he should.
He is one of those people I wish I could go back in time and hang out with because of the man he was, and alll the things he accomplished. Can you imagine the conversation you could have with him over an after dinner cigar?
As to admiring any President, you’ll never please everyone. They have all done something stupid, none of them have perfect lives. There are few that have such interesting histories as Teddy.
Now, addressing the t-shirt, I think that’s a cool design, honoring a man who accomplished a great deal. I like it.
Sorry, but nowadays there is no context where “rough rider” doesn’t sound gay. Especially with “had mustache” and a “big stick.”

Hitler and Ford are great examples of this, but its very important to know this, recognize it and be aware.. NOT snuff it to the side and say “that’s how things were”. General Motors wholly owned German subsidiary OPEL manufactured trucks for the Nazis throughout the Second World War… GM will give you a song and dance about their trucks helping to win the war….while they were also packing in enormous profits selling Opel’s to Hitler….BOTH sides, myopia is always unacceptable in the historic context..

See the thing is, most of us are perfectly okay with skewed opinions as long as the holder of said opinion is not opposed to others holding conflicting views. I think your perfectly entitled to have expressed it above. The editor expressed his conflicting view and rather than take it for what it was, you crossed a line and got all ridiculous because you couldn’t handle someone not agreeing.

I’ve been reading about TR the last few years, books both in praise of him and ones that try to take the piss out of him for one thing or another, but the most pressing question for me is whether there are Americans today with this kind of experience and unique ability to get things done.
