RPG Accidents – They’re Real

Yesterday, questions arose over information published by SSD regarding the PG-7 grenade. A rather distinguished reader read the comments and shot us a link to this three year old video showcasing the standoff for the PG-7 grenade. Notice that there isn’t any (minimum arming standoff). This round doesn’t spin to arm.

That’s funny! You hate it when you give a weapon to someone that is untrained and can’t aim. He shot the building in front of him… This just proves darwinism works.

  2. stevo says:

who knew the previous post about the RPG would cause such a shit storm

  3. chris says:

what do the kids say today? Epic Fail!

  4. Will says:

Not related apart from being stupid with a RPG.

No one who knew what they were talking about in the other post said anything about being centrifugally-armed (or “spin-armed” as was posted).

And I do have the AEODPS pub right here. Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter if people think they are always armed. Anyone having to dispose of them knows better, and I guess it will keep others at a distance if they think that. But for those that care:

A PG7 is setback-armed. The arming sequence is initiated at setback during launch, and when the slider spring overcomes the inertia (which should usually happen when the projectile is a safe distance away) then the firing train is lined up waiting for an electric signal from the piezo element in the nose.

The ONLY thing the above video shows is a malfunctioned slide assembly that allowed the detonator slide to line-up way too early. It also shows that the “distinguished poster” and OP don’t know what they’re looking at. It has nothing to do with the arming distance. The comment that it doesn’t spin to arm is correct, but no one was saying that. It is spin stabilized.

Go to your local EOD shop and ask if you can see any of the PG7 pubs – they should be FOUO.

I can’t effin believe that this is still being argued/an issue! Distance (relatively) and centrifugal force (doesn’t happen with a PG-7) are not the issue! PG-7s are not always armed either, it’s a matter if setback force that allows the detonator to align properly, which is of course caused by the initial ejection of the round and the ignition of the sustainment motor. (Should fully arm a safe distance away from the firer.)

JP, please don’t mention DOPs and still remember how to treat FOUO.

“Now see how your round went right of the target? That tells me you tensed up and jerked the trigger.. Next time I want you to take a breath, exhale and just squeeze.. Oh nevermind, you’re dead.”

  7. Quigley says:

Chalk this one up with the mortar crew fail lol. Has anyone thought about combining all of these into an insurgent blooper reel set to Benny Hill music?

  8. Bill says:

    Dear SSD,

Can you just take down these two RPG/PG-7 posts. Both are spreading massive misinformation and are wrong.

    Thank you,
    All of EOD

    (Yes, all of us)

    • Quigley says:

As long as it doesn’t interfere with my “insurgent blooper montage”

      • Bill says:

Oh I hope not. Watching weapons and explosives mishaps/malfunctions on insurgents is hilarious! I’m not bashing the video.

  9. JP says:

I guess the BHI Foreign Weapons Course doesn’t cover RPGs.

    • SSD says:

Naw, they wouldn’t let us schwack the trigger with a hammer. Something about it going off if you do that.

  10. Brian says:

It’s unfortunate that even simple posting turns into a typical forum pissing match.
That’s the main problem with gun forums now a days. People love to chime in and ruin it for everyone!

  11. Riceball says:

To clarify things for those of us who don’t know anything about the technical workings of the RPG/PG-7, was what we saw in the video a matter of user error or some sort of malfunction in the round?

    • I'm Surprised says:

It’s obvious that that guy was as wrong as two boys fucking. He fired it into a wall. Operator headspace and timing. What I’m befuddled by is the insistence of the “whole” EOD community that an RPG round won’t go off if the cap is struck hard enough. That is some silly assed shit right there. It seems like they are putting out bad shit just for fun. I’ve watched this site for awhile and seen EOD come on here and show their collective ass numerous times. I’d never tell someone that a munition packed with explosives and an initiator won’t go off if mishandled. Fucking stupid. And that video shows you that it doesn’t take 7 meters for it to arm. The Russians and others have literally manufactured millions of these rounds and handed them out like candy. The booger eaters don’t exactly run a climate controlled ASP to store their shit. I’d say, handle with care. I have yet to see one EOD guy say that. They’re too busy letting everyone know how awesome they are. Irresponsible, juvenile behavior.
