Ron Paul Calls It Like He Sees It

20130204-150024.jpg

In a tweet that supporters are calling a brave act, former Texas Representative Ron Paul calls it like he sees it posting, “Chris Kyle’s death seems to confirm that ‘he who lives by the sword dies by the sword.’ Treating PTSD at a firing range doesn’t make sense.”

What do you think?

I didn’t know God’s publicist was an SSD reader. Tell us more about how Chris Kyle deserved to die, you fucking asshole.

    + 1,000,000,000!!!!!
I have supported Ron Pauls positions on just about everything, but this is over the top uncalled for and a poor excuse for a literal interpretation of The Bible. Jesus also said let him that hath no sword let him sell his garment and buy one, so how do we reconcile these supposed diffrerences in theology?
Killing unjustly or killing innocents will more than likey lead to a persons painful and untimely death. aka Uaday and Quasay Hussein.
But the singular person in history to be recognized by GOD himself as a person after Gods own heart was King David who was resposnible for hundreds of thousands of peoples deaths. DO YOUR RESEARCH MR. PAUL!!!

    • Jeff says:

The whole “he who hath no sword, buy one” line was a specific response to a specific circumstance, not a blanket command for all people. I forget the details, but they were about to travel a bandit-infested road, or something like that.

      • GRIM says:

Luke 22:36 “But now,” he said, “take your money and a traveler’s bag. And if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one!

This was right before Jesus was crucified, he was telling his disciples what they’d need to travel the world and be prepared after he was gone.

You know normally I give a pass to people of a certain age who make nonsensical comments… And this situation is no different. I suppose this statement most likely occurred at sunset. I just hope he doesn’t take off walking somewhere.

  3. Nick says:

Just goes to show how much the public (and even I admittedly) knows about PTSD and treatments for it.

  4. Kaos 1 says:

Well, the great libertarian just put his foot in his mouth. And yes, the only people that I even talk to about PTSD , are other “combat” veterans. I dont go to the VA anymore, cause all i get is some pog-ass ex-navy LT CMR shrink asking me “and how does that make you feel”. No matter how detailed a story, no matter how vivid a picture , you will never understand unless you’ve been on a two-way range.

  5. John Uyeda says:

I have my doubts that this statement is actually Mr Paul’s. That being said, the onlt reason that ANYONE can say anything so assinine is because brave men like Mr. Kyle exist. God bless Mr Kyle.

I would get more upset over the statement, but as a PTSD diagnosed veteran I don’t want to make anyone’s arguement for them.

  6. thatguy says:

What a piece of shit. Fuck you Ron Paul.

  7. Jason says:

Ron Paul misunderstands the proverb. A mafia boss who kills others to protet his illegal activities getting killed by a rival crime family is a good example of the proverb’s manifestation. A SEAL who fought against foreign enemies being gunned down by a mentally ill person he was trying to help is not. He also clearly doesn’t understand the therapeutic effects sport shooting can have for many people.

Then again, Ron Paul’s position on war, foreign policy, and the military was always diametrically opposed to my own. I’m not surprised he fails to respect military heroes the way he ought to.

  8. Mark says:

I thought Ron Paul was an asshole before, and this only confirms it.

As a veteran, I certainly recognize that this weekend’s violence and killing of Chris Kyle were a tragic and sad event. My condolences and prayers go out to Mr. Kyle’s family. Unconstitutional and unnecessary wars have endless unintended consequences. A policy of non-violence, as Christ preached, would have prevented this and similar tragedies. -Ron Paul

  10. charlie says:

Remember tho that. Ron Paul is the biggest supporter of 2nd amendment in Washington. He wants practically ZERO gun laws.

Ron Paul just doesn’t like violence. Especially violence that derives from war in all its forms.

And to be honest Chris Kyle had a somewhat Christian smugness to him. Not in the Blackwater neocon 3rd way crusade stuff way but not fare from it.

He was talking about guardian angles and stuff and God and country and all that nonsense.

  11. Reverend says:

I think out of respect, he should have kept his mouth shut.

  12. james says:

WOW… he could not be more wrong… Chris was helping a brother in arms who was suffering…

Mr. Paul, less you be judged… do not judge those you know little to nothing about!

    • Tim says:

All his life he help where he could…Even to the end he was helping if this doesn’t show people how all American he was…

  13. Chuck says:

Like all politicians Ron Paul likes to hear himself speak. That said, he is a decent man and if we took most of his advice on national policy we’d be much better off.

Nevertheless, Mr. Paul has no more business telling someone like Chris Kyle how to do his job than Chris would have telling a heart surgeon or rocket scientist how to do theirs. Sometimes it’s best just to keep your mouth shut or to simply offer condolences.

There’s a time and a place for commenting on public policy. This was not it.

  14. Brearly Mason says:

Ron Paul is a combat veteran… just saying…

    • DGR says:

Doesnt mean anything! Just because someone is a combat veteran doesnt mean he cant be the scum of the earth. I have zero respect for any veteran who looks at the death of a national hero and comes away saying he deserved to die. I dont care if Ron Paul had 2 Silver Stars (like Kyle), 5 bronze stars (like Kyle) or 160 confirmed kills (like Kyle) he is a good for nothing POS!

      • Marc says:

I must have missed the “deserved to die” part. Or maybe you’re reading things which aren’t there.

  15. steve says:

I don’t give a fuck if he’s a combat vet….he still needs to kill himself

  16. Kaos 1 says:

Ron Paul was a flight surgeon in the air farce from 63-65 , then in the Texas air national guard from 65-68. He is not a “combat” veteran . He’s just a veteran , you pog’s and gun range ninja’s better learn that there is a difference .

  17. dude says:

What happened and what can we learn?

Real American Hero takes broken vet to shoot. He doesn’t know broken vet. He gives broken vet a gun (or broken comes with his own) and ends up shot. That’s basically what we knew when this was posted. Now Routh’s family says he has become overly aggressive and violent, in stark contrast to the good-hearted kid they sent to the Marines and he’s been in remanded to a mental health facility twice in the last 5 months. News reports say Routh was a friend of Littlefield, and Littlefield brought Kyle to the shoot.

What I can say from this much information is that it looks like there was a lack of basic security mindedness. I’ll go out on a limb and guess that RAH’s missions never consisted of embedding with 1000 locals, giving them guns and ammo and training, no common language, and only your sidearm and (maybe!) a panic button between you and a very bad day (TM).

Did Mr. Kyle deserve to die? Did 93 Rangers in Mogadishu? My early read says both happened for the same reason: not doing proper security assessments on the situation and adapting the plan to answer that. But who among us actually does a background check on a friend of a friend invited to join you at the range?

Paul’s post: What is he trying to get at in 140 characters or less? Consider the consequences of your actions. Consider the context of your actions. Accept risk, through negligence or consideration, accept the consequences.

What can we learn from this professionally? Personally?

  18. John says:

Wow! Do not know the circumstances surrounding Ron Paul and why he said this or if he said this. It is amazing… I do not think the Lord was talking about soldiers here…real soldiers… he was talking about those who earn a living causing fear in everyone else…sticking a gun in their face to “earn” a living, gain power… you know scare everyone into submission…they are usually destroyed by their own kind or someone who stands up to them…usually, it is a soldier like Kyle.

  19. Kaos 1 says:

Eddie ray Routh was a “mechanic” with the 22 MEU. PTSD my ass !!!!!!

    • mike says:

I know someone who worked on aircraft for the navy that did an IA tour and saw some pretty hairy shit that he’s not big on talking about. You know what they say about assuming…

    • Josh says:

Dude, you act like a elitist douche. I sure hope you’ve done something that puts your untouchable ass above these “pogs” and non hard mos’. Either way, speaking as a 18 series here, shut your mouth, and stop embarrassing yourself.

  20. Bb says:

Kyle’s book was my favorite read last year. If no one knows yet this killer just got out of a mental hospital last week. This was told to the 911 operator by Routh’s brother in law. It just goes to show no matter who you are you should never be around people who have mental or emotional problems that have a gun. This is so tragic but a lesson we should all learn from. I’m not afraid of thugs. I’m afraid of unstable people like this guy. They are unpredictable. It’s great to help people but common sense must be used. Now we have lost one of the greatest soldiers America has produced.

  21. Bill says:

Not eloquent, but his point is apt. However well intentioned, let’s let the mental health pros do their things and the trigger presses theirs. You wouldn’t take a suicidal person to a knot-tying or knife sharpening class.

  22. OmegaDR says:

Of course, Kyle didn’t deserve to die. But Ron Paul has a point. Despite the best of intentions, it probably wasn’t the best judgement call to take a unstable person to the range, with very little supervision.
