APOCALYPSE NOW

If I had to pick a single favorite movie it would have to be Francis Ford Coppola’s epic, “Apocalypse Now”. I’d have to say that no other movie influenced my generation of Soldiers more.

So this afternoon when my friend Author, Adventurer and Stand Up Philosopher Robert Young Pelton (he also makes a pretty mean knife) shared this trailer on Facebook I had to post it here on SSD. I am pretty sure this is first trailer I saw for “Apocalypse Now” as an impressionable 11-year-old in the Summer of ’79. And, this is what captured my imagination. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Apocalypse Now Redux takes it to a whole new level. Really a haunting experience that take a great film and for once improves on it. And the documentary on how it was made is excellent.

If RYP can do rare, see if he can find the recording of “River Music.” It’s the aoundtrack behind many of the scenes of the PBR cruising up river, and isn’t on the original soundtrack. It was recorded by one group, and supposedly released separately, but with decades of looking for it, it vanished, like mist in the jungle.

It would border on sacrilege, and either completely suck balls or be the greatest movie ever, but I’ve wonder what a digitally remastered vErsion, transferred to IMAX format with the sound remastered for a modern audio system would be like.

Stand up philosopher eh? Oh a bullshit artist.
    Did you bullshit today?
Did you try to bullshit today?
Are you going to try to bullshit tomorrow?

Not to derail any discussion on Apocalypse now, carry on.

Didn’t RYP buy the rights to the Blackwater logo, and now sells BW gear over the internet?

I don’t know the particulars to the deal by he does currently hold the licensing rights.

  6. I had no idea you were from 1968, as I am. So when I read you were 11 at the time, it rang my bell. Additionally, bought the Redux version 1 month ago from itunes – HD – and watched it probably 40 times already. Yep, I’m like that – are you?

It’s really difficult a movie so great being filmed again. I really miss this kind of war movies. Today too much attention is paid to FX effect but other things are more important.

I saw this movie a few times when I were young together with Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, and other great war movies. I guess that was a reason to become a Spanish Marine.

    Thanks for sharing this trailer.

First time I saw AN was in a college English Lit class, right after we read Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. The movie seemed a lot less cool after realizing it was the novela with the location changed to Viet Nam. I don’t know if that movie could be made today in the way it was then; the costs would be astronomical. It would probably replace Waterworld as the most expensive movie so far.
