Anyone Remember The Terminator’s Pistol?

You probably remember Arnie toting a laser equipped pistol in “The Terminator” but you may not know that it was manufactured by SureFire when they were known as Laser Products.

Designed by SureFire’s Ed Reynolds, a HeNe laser was adapted to an .45 AMT Hardballer Longslide. As with most Hollywood magic, the pretty package you see on screen isn’t exactly everything at work.

This early HeNe laser takes 10,000 volts to initiate and 1000 volts to keep running. This meant a large battery pack had to be concealed on the actor while in use. Schwarzenegger would have to reach inside his field jacket to turn it on.

In addition to the working model, SureFire also created a nonworking prop model. But none of this would have been possible if lasers for the Colt Trooper and AR15 as well as Ruger Mini-14 had not already been engineered. In typical Hollywood fashion, they didn’t want to pay for the technology. According to Reynolds, he got a T-shirt, a sweatshirt, a baseball cap, and a poster. Additionally, Laser Products is mentioned in the credits.

Surefire’s first big deal happened when they supplied LAPD and LACSD with shotgun mounted lasers for the 1984 Summer Olympics. It really is crazy to think how a few decades can totally change a company.

I remember the pistol, and the BTS story about the battery (makes me remember the same deal with the Old Painless in Predator).

I also remember the game appearing in Resident Evil 4 as a magnum pistol. DAMN powerful one, too.

At least he was, especially relative to California, a relatively gun friendly governator.

Democrats aren’t necessarily bad. Liberal democrats are. Hell, liberals of any party are.

Why would a Terminator need a laser anyway? 😛

Also in T2 trijicon acog grabs some screen time. Its the optic sara conner has mounted that she shoots miles dyson with. this was in 1991/92 it would take almost 13 years before the military adopted it as a standard optic
