Mystery Ranch Says “F U” to PALS

Mystery Ranch is constantly looking for a better mousetrap and when a military customer asked for a MOLLE compatible attachment system that doesn’t rely on a snap. They looked at several other, available types but eventually settled on this in-house solution which they feel is ultimately more secure when under load. The simple toggle and loop can be used as a belt loop or woven into MOLLE platforms. The Ghillie-Tex toggle is from ITW Military Products and the loop is a 2mm woven cord. The first two inches of the web strap is stiffened to facilitate weaving while the remainder of the web strap remains supple.

The new Mystery Ranch Toggle and Loop is now found on all their MOLLE compatible pouches.

Looks way better than snaps or Velcro. Opening it without tools makes it better than the MALICE clip too IMO. I hope it catches on.

Looks like a nice system except that you eliminated one problem only to create another. Like everything else plastic these will break. There are other exsting systems that are already completely hardware free. T3 gear has a tuck in system, Blue Force uses velcro and S.O.Tech uses their tab system which is also excellent.

That’s my concern too. Much easier to attach but, there’s still that downside. For the moment, BFG and malice clips are what I am most comfortable with.

Looks great, if they’ve found, how to make these thread loops solid enough. Sewn-in threads are often a weak point of different kinds of gear, because it’s hard to control the exact position of stitches over the relatively thin thread.

The toggle reminds me of BAE’s SOFLCS solution pouch closures.

I’m happy to see lots of options out there.

    supple? Really?

    • SSD says:

Yes, you know…SUPPLE – of a body or body part : able to bend or twist easily: soft and able to bend or fold easily.

Mystery Sponge releases a product that doesn’t gain 10 pounds when wet, we should be applauding. Still waiting for a jungle friendly ruck, hint, hint…

There are some problems that I see:

    1) Sew-in cord (4 places for each clip) holds in a few stitches unlike webbing – not very reliable. Also destroy few fibers and you will ruin the whole cord. BTW Why they didnt use some 550 paracord?

    2) Also I feel that it can be not very comfortable to unsnap this clip when the pouch is really attached to platform, becase you must hold a small pieces of cord and plastic with your fingers

I developed this method in May of last year as a part of a family of PALS connections available open-source to small quantity gear manufacturers and DIY’ers.
It was described in text here:

I haven’t been using this connection type recently, but am aware of a few gear makers using it.

Helium Whisper from Blue Force Gear seems to me like a best way

Not sure how this is “F U to PALS” as PALS is just the ladder system of weaving the nylon straps on the pouch into the nylon webbing on a carrier system. It seems as though with this system, you are still required to weave the straps. The only difference being that you don’t have to tuck the remaining pouch strap back up into the back of the pouch. Seems like the title is a little misleading. I can definitely see three failure points; stitching holding the nylon cord on the strap, the plastic ITW Ghillie-tex toggle, and the stitching holding the cord supporting the ITW Ghillie-tex toggle. I think I’ll stick with standard PALS.
