Attention Ops-Core: These Photos Are Keepers

First, we see Chief of Staff of the Army GEN Ray Odierno donning an Ops-Core Maritime FAST Helmet as he prepares to observe a live fire demo by members of 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Fort Hunter Liggett, CA.

Next, he is out in the field, kitted out. I also dig that the CSA is wearing the Operational Camouflage Pattern even though it is a CONUS training exercise.

On the other hand, we have this photo taken at a different time and place, of the Commander-in-Chief, President Obama wearing an ACH with the worst cover I have ever seen. If looking cool is winning, then GEN Odierno is taking home the trophy. The POTUS? Well, maybe that’s what happens when you hang out with Marines.
What a Helmet
(Thanks Feral Jundi for the heads up on the POTUS helmet.)

PT belt over OCP for the win!

  2. Chuck says:

That PT belt is an embarrassment.

    • Free Hugs says:

Thats an OC marker showing non essential training personnel. Its just a unit TTP, not that big a deal.

  3. TF says:

Put the cover on backwards…just for potus

    • MikeP says:

I’m actually pretty sure that’s a K Pot with the chin strap/suspension system conversion to make it fit more like an ACH. The K Pot is cut much differently though, and when you wear it with the conversion it looks very ‘tall,’ like in that picture.

  4. Stan says:

Oooh…. Another immature insult by SSD on the Marines… Did someone get beat up by a jarhead when he was little? Or is it just a case a simple jealousy? Or is SSD still angry he couldn’t wear MARPAT like he so clearly wanted to? Which ever it is, it’s unbecoming on a website that claims to be serious “journalism”. Might as well bring back the toys and girls with guns stories from Tactical Fanboy if you’re going to keep this low level of professionalism.

On a more serious note I’d be careful mocking the President like that. He is the Commander in Chief after all and his people don’t forget those sorts of things and they like to get payback. It would be a shame if SSD got a visit from the IRS or active members of the DOD were told not to associate with the site.

    • Red says:

      Seriously…
But I must say the President could certainly do better… especially with his ear pro. Solid choice.

    • Steven S says:

      GO HOME, YOU’RE BUTTHURT

Seriously, it’s a simple Marine joke. Also, I doubt his “people” would really care. Unlike you, I think they would not take this so personally.

      jeez

    • Ben says:

Why do all Marines assume people in other services care about them?

    • SSD says:

As for making fun of POTUS? I just posted a picture of the guy. I didn’t dress him. I was kind of under the impression from the photo that the Marines put him in it.

      • Frank says:

I’m pretty sure thats (then) Sen Obama visiting Iraq on a CODEL. That vest is what the DoS gives “combat tourists” when they come to visit.

      • majrod says:

SSD – it’s payback for mispronouncing Corpsmen & that umbrella pic…

On a separate note some folks are pretty sensitive. Wonder what they do when another service is outright maligned?

        Cricket… cricket… cricket…

  5. Ol’ boy looks like he’s trying to not bust out laughing at POTUS’ bucket.

  6. Doc_robalt says:

Hey Gen Ordierno how does that kit feel??? Probably pretty freaking good, how about you outfit the rest of the dam force with that crap instead of the crap KDH plate carriers.

  7. Free Hugs says:

This just sums up everything wrong with the Army right now. The CSA wearing the best kit money can buy, while the rest of his Army is wondering how in the fuck we are still wearing an outdated combat helmet, with a plate carrier that is sub par.

  8. Bill says:

Really, POTUS is going to sic the NSA on SSD, and the entire USMC will be beating their computers with bars of soap in socks…but the CinC is giving off some serious Dukakis vibes there.

  9. Invictus says:

Never felt unwelcome on SSD as a Marine… specially since he digs at pretty much everyone if you’re here long enough, plenty of stupid in all services.

    • Joe momma says:

Yes, plenty of stupid in all services, possibly even equal per capita….
But the marines take the cake for butt hurt….per capita

  10. Mike says:

I love the fact that a Gen has to be assisted putting on a helmet and PC. And look both ways before you cross the street…

    • Terry says:

He’s the CSA. Everywhere he goes people “help” him whether he needs it or not.

      • SSD says:

Exactly. I’m pretty sure he can put his pants on. He just can’t make a decision on what color they should be.

        • Free Hugs says:

          BAHZING!!!!^^^^^

          • You've got to be kidding me says:

If someone were to want to help me put on my helmet & armor I wouldn’t complain, hell, they can even help me throw on my trousers if it makes’em feel more important

  11. Andrew K says:

Obama kind of looks like the Great Gazoo…then again here’s an ex PM of ours…

    • BradKAF308 says:

LOL! That image immediately popped in my mind. I was going to post it too, LOL. You win.

  12. 32sbct says:

Well since the CSA is wearing OCP in CONUS maybe it is sign of good things to come. Maybe the non announcement of switching to OCP is getting closer. Hey I can hope anyway.

  13. Badjujuu says:

What’s funny is that we’re constantly being reminded that we cannot wear our own coyote plate carriers and we have to wear issued IBAs. And here is this picture. Granted, we’re not a Ranger unit, but a light line unit.

  14. Blamo says:

OCP in CONUS training is the standard for the 75th.

    • SSD says:

But not for Big Green. Last time I checked the CSA is not assigned to the 75th.

      • Subandsand says:

Big Army, Big Navy, doesn’t really seam to matter at that level they all just kinda do whatever they please. The rules are below them.

  15. OCP is just the Multicam pattern, right?

      • OK, dumb question…why don’t they just call it “multicam” instead of OCP?

        • SSD says:

Because that is a commercial name. When the Army uses it, it is OCP.

        • bloke_from_ohio says:

Because multicam is not an acronym. “Field” uniforms have to be described by three letter acronyms. It is practically a law of nature. BDU, DCU, ACU, NWU, ABU, ACU ect…

Of course, the Marines have a uniform (the FROG) that is a four letter word. In light of the wide spread and creative use of actual four letter words in everyday communications by Marines should not be a supprise. My guess is they did that to stay true to the time honored linguistic traditions of the Corps.

(I am not insulting the Marines. I am making a pun about how often they swear…)

          • SSD says:

Actually the Army uses an FR ACU or a combination of ACS and ACP. Ironically the ACU or Army Combat Uniform isn’t worn in combat at all.

            • bloke_from_ohio says:

The FR ACU does not fit into my joke. So I ommited it. But in a similar way the ABU is not used by Airmen in battle either (at least not in Afghanistan). That is why I said field uniforms not combat, and why it was in quotes.

I could make a joke about the Navy never working to mock the NWU, but that would be untrue. Besides, they get enough flack for their patern as it is. This is dispite it apearently hiding oil and the like really well like it was designed to do. Unlike ACU/ABU that hide nothing.

          • Riceball says:

The standard issue MARPAT uniform is officially known as MCCU or Marine Corps Combat Uniform, which is also a 4 letter acronym.

  16. Nick says:

I’m kind I surprised they had an ops core On hand big enough to fit him. Everything about him, noggin included, is huge.

  17. J_Douglass says:

I think these 3 photos say it all when it comes to the current state of things in both the Army, and the DoD right now.

  18. Reseremb says:

Dumb question, which Ops Core cover is that in the pictures?

Ops Core? LBT/ODG? First Spear? Tyr?
