In this week’s Friday Focus we’ll take a look at the FirstSpear Comms Packs.
Offered in two sizes, the packs are identical in features. The Medium sized model offers 980 cu in of capacity and the Large model is 1800 cu in capacity.
Based off of the popular Exigent Circumstance Pack, the Comm Pack offers a decidedly urban styling in order to help mask its true role. The zippered main compartment offers ample storage for a wide variety of communications devices or other equipment and the cable access ports are discreetly located. Inside, there’s a padded laptop sleeve and zippered mesh pocket.
The pack incorporates padded shoulder straps with QR buckles as well as a low profile, padded haul loop handle at the top of the pack. The mesh, padded back of the pack offers the distinctive FirstSpear logo stitched design but don’t worry, it’s going to be against your back while your wearing it. Each side of the pack features a mesh pocket for water bottles or other items. There is also an exterior, beavertail-style flap with dual zippered compartments for quick storage. Additionally, there is a flat zippered pocket at the front of the pack under the flap.
Berry Compliant and offered in Black, Blue/Silver, Ranger Green/Coyote and Ripstop Light Grey.

Great pack, shame it doesn’t come with the same mounting variations as the military variant.
The Comm Pack I have is perfection. I have the smaller version and the amount of pockets it has is incredibly surprising. For some reason, people who aren’t familiar with the pack get overwhelmed by the amount of stash locations there are located on it. It’s always comical to watch. The two internal zippered mesh pockets are an awesome feature and I use the top one for an immediate access blow-out kit. The moment I got the pack, I loved how comfortable it was. The padding is so thick that you can carry books, EDC items and then a 40 pound weight without the slightest pressure on your back. The ONLY gripe I have about the pack is that the mesh pocket I use for medical supplies is sewn in and isn’t able to be torn out.
Love my original version but the laptop pocket is too small for my corporate issue 15in laptop. Hope the large version has bigger laptop pocket…
I really love mine which is RG/Coyote in medium, it’s perfect for my daily commute and even regular airplane rides. I use it everyday.
If I could, I would only improve two things on it:
1- Add some padding at the bottom of the back. Since it’s meant to have laptops or electronics in, a little bit of padding would do good when putting it on the floor.
2- The flap to allow the hydration tube to come out is quite gaping when worn normally, which means it allows rain to get in right on top of the laptop compartment which defeats the point of having some nice rubbery waterproof material next to it. I’d remove the flap altogether, I’m sure the times I’d use a bladder would be rarer against the time it rains. I could always get the tube through the zipper anyway.
I know it sounds a lot, but honestly those are minor issues, the bag is awesome, better than the military version imho (which I have too) and cheaper.
