The Norwegian painter, Knud Bergslien (b. 1827 d. 1908) painted the famous picture Birkebeinerne, depicting two loyal soldiers carrying the young prince, Hakon Hakonsson, to safety in 1206. In 1945 Bergans paid N.Dr.5,000 for the rights to use the theme. The name “Birkebeiner” is a registered Bergans brand name. The painting was used as a brand image for a period of 50 years and was re-designed as the vignette used on Bergans products today.

Here is some more info about the actual Birkebeiners; http://www.birkebeiner.no/en/MainMenu/About-Birken/About-Birken/The-Birkebeiner-History/
Bergans have done a lot of various tactical gear, mostly packs including the current issued 80L pack for the Norwegian mil. My favorite piece is a Bergans made Eagle SF30/BHI Commando chestrig that they built for our SOF.
Can I get a link to their military line?
They don’t really have one..
On their site the only thing I can find is this; http://catalog.bergans.eu/RUCKSACKS/backpacks/Viking-90L-Large-Dk-Green-151730-p0000616608
Which is the 90L pack issued to Norwegians, but in a different material (issued is 725D Cordura and CB).
Thanks, I see the have a POC on their FAQs page
There used to be a Birkebeiner brewpub in Spokane, which displayed a version of this image and the story behind it. They had pretty good beer, too.
