FirstSpear Friday Focus – Wind Cheater

WindCheater_CoyoteGroup_8688

For this week’s Friday Focus, we’re taking a look at the long-awaited Wind Cheater. The Wind Cheater is a durable yet breathable lightweight shell made with Duro Ambush with DWR treatment, which provides protection from light precipitation. The Wind Cheater also compresses well for storage, and is flexible, with a longer tail that will keep the wearer’s lower back and seat covered.

The Wind Cheater sports a number of features that benefit the overall functionality of the shell. The articulated hood is sized to fit over a helmet, and includes rear bungee retention, which allows the wearer to adjust it to their optimal size. Both sleeves feature zippered bicep pockets, FS’ low-profile Velcro attachment panels, and adjustable cuffs. Pit zips on either side of the Wind Cheater offer improved airflow and ventilation at the user’s discretion. The Wind Cheater also has two large-sized zippered torso pockets.

If you’re looking for a replacement for your PCU Level 5 jacket, this is it.  I’ve had one for a couple of weeks and love it.

Available in Black, Coyote, and Multicam in sizes SM – 2X.

  1. Perfect time of the year, too. Am I a gear whore if I want one of these and the HPG version as well?

  2. Invictus says:

The spearhead logo in the loop field is a nice touch. Well done.

Can anyone compare this to the SORD hardface?

  3. Phil says:

how does this compare to the Arc’teryx Combat and other Tweave jackets?

  4. Rearmount says:

That looks sharp. Any plans for a green or gray version?

  5. Jon, OPT says:

Awesome, just ordered one for T&E, perfect fall outerwear for the NC mountains.

And it’s not 500 bucks! I love FS gear but sometimes their stuff is uber pricey. Glad this is reasonable.

  7. "Bob" says:

Any chance of this in a gray or variation of green?

I love the longer tail, they don’t make enough clothes like that. Being 6’4 has its disadvantages.

    Excellent price point as well.

  8. Kerbert says:

Do you love it because you got it for free?

    • SSD says:

Well, it wasn’t free. Thanks for your ill informed attempt to besmirch my integrity. Your question made me curious though. Do you still turn tricks out back, behind the club?

The basic design has been around for some time with FS so I’ve been drooling over this thing for quite some time. I love it because it is well designed and well made. They chose a great fabric and kept the design simple. In fact, I’m not the only guy who likes it. The guys at Hill People Gear are coming out with a variant of it soonish.

  9. Dave says:

SSD. How did you find sizing?

  10. FOXTAC says:

On behalf of SAR people, please do one in red or some other hi-viz color as well.

We love functional designs and I personally really dislike how very few civilian designs have shoulder pockets.

  11. Darrel says:

Need it in Alpha Grey, but this looks really nice. The price is sweet too, especially compared to some of the bloated surplus and Beyond prices. I love the long cut back. Really good for SOB carry of handguns, knives, or just plain old covering your wallet in the rain.

Looks like it’s made out of a material that will actually take a little abrasion. I always thought that the PCU ends up feeling kind of “sticky” when you sweat it in, like it’s almost melting onto you. I love my PCU Gen II but I’m always looking for new softshells.

  12. Luke says:

Having briefly seen one in person I will say that
    a) the fabric is incredibly soft
    b) they were smart and sourced a fabric with no spandex, should hold less water then a lot of these semi-stretchy wind shirts
    c) really cool details like hypalon zipper garages and the laser-cut logo velcro really round it out.
    d) if you look at the pattern there is some arcteryx in it’s ancestry, definitely a good thing.
