From 1988-1990, I was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division in Wuerzburg, Federal Republic of Germany. How many of you served in Germany during the Cold War, and in particular, during the breakup of the Warsaw Pact and Soviet Union? If so, where?

I was with the 1st AD, at Ansbach AAF in Katterbach (I CO., 1st Avn Regt) from 1987 to 1989. when the wall came down, I was at Fort Lewis (D CO. 1/9 Avn Regt).
2/36 IN as it transitioned to 3/5 CAV in Kirchgoens – The Rock. Went to Berlin and was able to rent a hammer to chip off my own piece of the Wall. Great times!
I remember the S2 brief…we could not go to the wall and remove a piece – we had to have a German national retrieve a piece for us….crazy party / drunk / then we were like holly crap….its Dan Rather!
If the Bundeswehr still use it, it was money well spent. Lots of kaserne are used for housing gastarbeit. Poorly.
I rotated out before the fall of the wall but a good friend of mine was on Gibbs in Frankfurt in late ’89, and was already manifested for one of those weird train rides to “west” Berlin planning to do some of the goofy stuff the MPs and S2s briefed us not to do. He was told 50/50 that the train would be cancelled due to all the turbulence in the East German government but because he had “banked” all his briefings, was already on leave and his paperwork was tight (the three ways they were trying to wave off joes), he was allowed to board.
His 150 lb. graffiti-covered chunk of the wall is prominently featured in his living room, and his story about getting it back to Frankfurt is as good as any episode of “Drunk History.”
It’s their logistics school now… Lucius D. Clay Kaserne. Not to be confused with Wiesbaden AAF. LOL
I drove by it every day for five years between 2009 and 2014. It’s a shame it wasn’t ours anymore – that drive down to Wiesbaden to periodically hit the Commissary was a pain.

Not during the fall of the wall, but during the time the USSR was moving troops out of Czeckoslovakia for their “invasion” of Afghanistan. They were moving their units on the border, who had older equipment, to Afghanistan and replacing them with troops with the current/newer equipment. We had major alerts practically every month because we thought it was the prelude to their coming across the border.
