Admire for what exactly? For spending money on military stuff while f**king up everything else, including education and R&D, required to keep up with arms race? Or for doing the same to officers and their families, making them living in buildings like this one: http://photos.wikimapia.org/p/00/01/38/86/76_big.jpg (one of apartment buildings in Zaozyorsk, where officers of Northern Fleet are quartered). Even in USSR, this level of negligence was impossible.
Well… I’d give them some credit for being able to navigate the Cat VI hurricane that is the world of Russian women, who are frequently both beautiful and criminally insane.
Barracks sometimes look similar from the outside (no balconies, though), but with a hall full of bunk beds inside, instead of rooms. If you are interested, check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCnP9h5NAzE – it’s a CCTV footage taken in VDV barracks in Omsk, 2015, during a building collapse. http://cdn-st1.rtr-vesti.ru/p/xw_1121709.jpg 24 soldiers were killed. It was built in 1975 with all kinds of construction code violations. In 2013 it was reconstructed, again, with code violations and without any sign of an approved project.
It’s okay for the mud-folks to live in buildings like that, just not those poor officers right? Go look at where so many American joes who are on WIC live.
As much as they are our adversary this is kind of funny. I would hope that we returned the favor.
I’m as patriotic and red blooded as anyone in the country, but it’s hard not to admire the Russians.

Maskirovka gets it!
If that is the officers quarters, do they just throw the enlisted guys in a pit?

As the cool kids say, eat a snickers my friend.
Where’s the mandatory Russian Orthodox priest?

I hope it read “from Russia with Love”
Nothing says Merry Christmas like a mobile ICBM.
