Barebones Living Pulaski Axe and Folding Shovel Now Available

The Barebones Living Pulaski Axe and Folding Shovel we first saw at Outdor Retailer Winter Market are now available. Both designs are inspired by tools used by woodland firefighters.

Pulaski Axe

With a head which combines an axe head and an adze, it’s made from 1055 high carbon steel withand a 21″ Beech wood handle. Additionally, there is a 1/3” solid steel core through the wood handle which secures the head with a tightening hex bolt and connects it to the steel pommel end. The pommel can be used for pounding. The Pulaski also comes with a leather sheath.

Folding Shovel

Weighing in at just over 3.5 lbs, the shovel offered a 3-position (shovel, trenching, and storage positions), folding Manganese head. The Beech wood handle offers a D-style grip.

I love the design on that Pulaski and the price is not unreasonable either.

Yeah, not really out of line with other higher end small axes, like a ganfors bruks. Haven’t seen any reviews out for it yet, looks pretty good though. Axe grind angle is the only thing I have any questions about at all.

Sigh. It’s only money, I guess.

If you haven’t ordered from them before, you can go to to the website and look for the pop-up(it was on the main page I think) asking to join their newsletter and get a % off your first order.

The only thing that makes me a bit cautious about the axe is the head being bolted on. I know its a different thing and the possibility of buying cheap crap but we have baby sledge hammers with the heads bolted on that we have to tighten over and over again with moderate use. I’m sure they have better assembly standards than low cost bidder tools.

The ADF standard issue Tools; Entrenching is of a similar design. The only time I’ve ever broken one (a few actually) was on the rock-solid hard red earth of the North West when told to dig a fighting position. Even the mattocks and pickaxes “requisitioned” from the engineers had a hard time on that terrain.

Have you tried some high strength Loctite on the hardware?

I picked one up from LL Bean. They were doing 20% off and I had a $10 credit.

Right now they are doing 25% off everything. They always have free shipping on items.

Axe is nice. Heavier duty than I had thought.
