When I was a younger man (and still in the service), I often used the term “Soup Sandwich”. These days, it’s “Football Bat” but I guess that’s a tough one to draw.

This kind of misses the point of the expression. “Soup sandwich” is an out of control mess, two pieces of bread can’t hold soup. This is an image of what would more accurately be described as sandwich soup, and it’s in a can, so… no mess… good effort, but not appealing to pedantic, possibly autistic people like me.
It’s a swing and a miss with the football bat, for sure.
You’ve clearly never had our condensed Soup Sandwich, it’s a real mess to eat.
I wear RE Factor shirts but I wouldn’t wear this shirt. Why would I wear a shirt that gives off the impression that I’m F’ed up… that I’m a soup sandwich? I wouldn’t.
Swing and a miss is right
I get the idea; a can of soup soon-to-be-on bread is probably easier to illustrate than an actual soup sandwich. At the same time, in my old TC unit, the only thing more ate up than a soup sandwich was being a bowl of dick soup.
