RedForge was created by an old Marine friend of mine. He’s been forging knives for some time but now he’s introducing Damascus firearms accessories.
Their first offering in this category is magazine floorplates, for the Glock double-stack 9mm/.40SW pistol, precision machined from RedForge Damascus steel.
You can choose from random pattern or thatch weave mosaic pattern.
Are they coated with something? 15N20/1084 damascus steel will rust. Very cool idea though. Stainless damascus is harder to produce but very do-able.
Not coated. It’s definitely a plain carbon steel part. We us a product called Renaissance Wax on all our non kitchen damascus. I’ve ran a couple hundred rounds with the first article peice and just rubbed on a good coat when I was done shooting. We looked at doing stainless damascus but it’s incredibly expensive to do anything but the most basic patterns. Plus it has to be etched for weeks. With carbon damascus we can afford to offer cooler patterns at a lower price. If you do let it get actual rust they’re pretty easy to refinish with common household stuff (scotchbrite, vinegar, acetone and baking soda).
Renaissance Wax is great stuff. I use it in the shop as well. Try etching your stainless in warm muriatic acid. Works like a champ and doesn’t take that long. I do it all the time.
Beautiful and clever work.
The thatch weave part was really clever. I had to Google that the Admiral spelled his name Thach. I thought he was a Marine.
We just got our first thatch weave floorplates back from Laser Etching. We’ll have pictures up on instagram @redforgeewt and on our website soon. Though a true warrior we named it after the pattern’s appearance and not the indominable Adrmiral John Thach. I’m not clever enough to have thought of “Thach Weave”.
