I spent a few days this week at SIG SAUER during a Defense Products Group media event. We were invited into CEO Ron Cohen’s office and I spied a plaque with models of their machine gun variants and the words, “Suck Less,” a mantra that many of us heard in the military on how to be better. It was cool to see it being used by SIG’s team.
The words “suck less” are not what I want to hear about a new machine gun. I want to hear words like “reliable” or “boring”. “brings down a hail of bullet wrath on the enemy”.
Oh yeah, this one sucks less. Well if that is the US Army’s benchmark. Well…
I see that was completely lost on you.
Sucking less might be just enough considering they are competing against a rimless shotgun shell that shoots out of a gun that defies immediate action and a plastic round made by an ammo company that doesn’t actually make any ammo which is fired from a bullpup. The bar isn’t exactly super high now is it?
Sig has really changed up their whole approach over the last decade. They saw the opportunity to go after the contracts and it appears they made the right decisions to get there. Hopefully it turns out well for their business. We all know what happened when Colt put all their eggs in one basket.
I was just there. I can’t disclose precisely how many, but they are manufacturing thousands of firearms per day for the civilian market.
Any word on the MCX SPEAR?
Commercially? In 277 SIG Fury or another caliber?
Yes
You were supposed to see the Spear commercially in .308 in 2022. But I’m not sure if that will happen, due to the current spike in demand. Few companies are introducing new products because it competes for resources within the company and they’re already selling everything they’re making.
I’d buy that plaque.
It’s a nice family portrait.
A lofty goal is a good thing to have.
Laconic phrases are the best.
What ever happened to the NSW SURG? Is that DOA?
No, look for a report soon on SSD with the latest update.
8 out of 80 Romeo 5s dead before 100 rounds. About half didn’t turn on, the other not holding zero. Logo falls right off just handling it, detents run the gamut from none to very impressive. CS has replaced them all but Sucking Less might be a goal to shoot for in the optics division for sure.
Have you tried any of their other optics? I mean the ROMEO5 is only $180 MSRP. Maybe consider the ROMEO4?
Sig optics were rough when first introduced. I had never seen so many RMA need to get issued out of the gate for something. The problem was systematic and the early Romeo4’s were some of the biggest offenders. However, the current Romeo4t’s are squared away. Maybe not Aimpoint Micro squared away but I have no problem recommending one and I have no complaints currently being issued one.
This administration and likely Defense budget cuts that Democratic Presidents usually bring worries the outlook for this project.
I long ago went through the stages of grief and accepted the fact that the Army is going to select and field something. Just hope that it’s something viable. This is the only shot they are going to get.
Thanks for all you provide us, I have followed this site for a decade I guess. The Sig family looks like a great push forward. I would love to get some trigger time on one those Sig Belt feds.
NUTNFANCY would be very proud.
