I found out during the NRA Annual Meeting that Mountainhouse is now offering the freezdried Long Range Patrol ration components they make for the military to commercial customers. There are currently seven entrees available and these differ from their commercially available freeze dried offerings in a couple of ways. First off, the military rations have about twice the amount of protein. There’s the packaging. They are vacuum packed but there’s no oxygen absorber so they are only guaranteed for three years.
They are very popular due to their lightweight and compact form factor so if it’s not in stock, check back.

I was twisting their arm to do this 6 months ago, told the rep to pass the message to the decision makers. Not taking credit, but for UL backpackers, thru-hikers, and anyone patrolling with long range loads this is a huge win! Great job Oregon Freeze Dried!

What is the reason for no o2 absorbers?
They plan to consume them fairly quickly and they wanted them as compact and lightweight as possible.

Not sure if they have any left as I heard from some of my buddies that these might be a limited run(?) Good stuff though. As an alternative, the Mountain House Pro-Pak’s have O2 absorber’s and are vacuum sealed so they’re more compact than their traditional pouch products. Shelf life is better than the LRP’s too, although you don’t get that .mil looking packaging.
There were overrun sales in the past but Mountainhouse plans to fully stock these now. That move is good for both government and consumer as it keeps the line open, controlling costs and a steady supply.
I used to bring regular mountain house meals to the field all the time instead of MREs. Since I was usually running out of a truck on Field problems, I had room for my jetboil and a few of these meals. They lasted me both lunch and dinner so it worked well for me.
